It's only June, but the race for the District 23 U.S. House seat is so hot it feels like August.
While the open primary is Aug. 31, incumbent Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar, and challenger Keith Clayborne, a newspaper publisher from Coral Springs, are already exchanging charges almost daily.
Clayborne, who has put up $100,000 of his own money to try to unseat Hastings, has unveiled TV ads that highlight the congressman's troubled past.
The challenger's deep pockets and attack politics have made the six-term representative take Clayborne seriously. Hastings has opened a campaign office on Oakland Park Boulevard. He has a public relations office regularly cranking out e-mails about his daily activities or favorite issues such as the West Palm Beach Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
