A man arrested in a police-involved shooting says he was beaten by officers after he was handcuffed on the Palmetto Expressway.

Eloy Saltare was initially charged with aggravated battery with a firearm for the alleged attack on his girlfriend that sparked the police pursuit.
What happened to Eloy Saltare's face?

That was the question raised after the former Belle Glade officer's jarring jail photo showed him badly injured during his September arrest. Police say he fired a handgun at a Miami-Dade officer as they drove alongside each other on the Palmetto Expressway.

His attorney now says Saltare was beaten by officers from Miami-Dade, and possibly Hialeah. Saltare plans a lawsuit, attorney Gary Rosenberg said Monday.

Saltare was initially charged with aggravated battery with a firearm for the alleged attack on his girlfriend that sparked the police pursuit.
That charge was later dropped.

He has yet to be charged with the alleged gun attack on Officer Hector Valls, 42, who fired at Saltare and missed.

''For someone who did no crime and was beaten severely, there are no charges of battery or even resisting arrest,'' Rosenberg said. ``Why was he beaten so severely? There are a lot of questions to be answered.''

2. Beats a woman/shoots at officers? No sympathy.

An X-cop, whose trained in police tactics, is surprised when he gets the smack down after committing domestic assault with a firearm, shooting at officers and leading a chase (which no doubtedly put many people in harms way). Now he goes and gets a lawyer to sue. Only in America, my friends. Good luck with the case, but he's lucky a bruised face is all he got.

3. He may or may not deserve your sympathy but our injustice system does.

Cops are the last people who should be acting as judge and jury and the fact that this guy was a cop speaks volumes as to the type of person who should not be on any police force as does the beating, the summary punishment, he received. This crap goes on every day in every jurisdiction with rarely any accountability.

5. He chose how to be taken into custody.

I'm not saying there isnt abuse by police; there is abuse by those in power every day in all aspects of our society. But this clown chose to run having full knowledge of police command and control tactics. Arresting someone isnt a matter of simply putting on cuffs. Suprisingly, people being arrested often dont want to be arrested and resist. Once they resist officers use any means at their disposal to subdue an individual (and sometimes cops make mistakes just like regular people). This individual committed multiple felonies and resisted arrest. All he had to do was lay down and follow direction.

Poor dear.... If only the woman he pistol whipped could sue for damages.....

7. I'm not saying they are

And I'm not saying they should. I'm saying that taking people into custody is no easy feat, especially when people resist arrest. You shouldnt confuse an arrest with "justice". They are two totally separate processes. I'm saying that when people follow officers direction during an arrest the vast majority of the time there are no issues. When people choose to disregard officers direction and have to be taken into custody for committing crimes, police are trained to use pain as to cause submission. Just because you cant see the result, like when they use pressure points etc doesnt mean we shouldnt face the reality of what happens on the street.

The cops used pain as a means of submission in this instance, big deal. The suspect was a former cop, knew what was going to happen and did it anyway. Dont resist and it doesnt happen, especially in such an obvious case as this.

or what he did. This could have been you, or me, or anyone else, and for far, far less reason that his crime.

In case you need the reminder, people have been killed- BY police- for no reason at all. It's called tasering, and it's deadly.

I don't like police at all. I view each and every last one of them with extreme suspicion, caution, and attention to detail, lest they fail to dot even one I or cross even one T. Beating a suspect in this manner- for any reason, on suspicion of any crime- is. Not. Acceptable.

His victim, if any, is unconnected to the fact that he was ILLEGALLY beaten. Bringing up his victim is a strawman appeal to emotion and nothing more.

Police have no right to beat suspects, regardless of their crime.

I'm certainly not saying that we should collectively "lay down" and follow direction. That was a huge leap and your assumption of my beliefs are just plain goofy. If you commit a crime, and you are confronted by police, if you choose to flee you will be caught most of the time and you will be subdued. Reality. If you, in the arresting situation, follow direction and submit, your arrest will go much more smoothly. Also reality.

I'm sorry if this concept is hard to understand. It is our duty as Americans to question authority, but not when you have just kicked the sh*% out of your girlfreind.
