Student Arrested After Cutting Food With Knife
Student Arrested After Cutting Food With Knife
10-Year-Old Charged With Possession Of Weapon On School Property

An elementary student in Marion County was arrested Thursday after school officials found her cutting food during lunch with a knife that she brought from home, police said.

The 10-year-old girl, a student at Sunrise Elementary School in Ocala, was charged possession of a weapon on school property, which is a felony.

According to authorities, school employees spotted the girl cutting her food while she was eating lunch and took the steak knife from her.

The girl told sheriff's deputies that she had brought the knife to school on more than one occasion in the past.

4. Common sense by parents packing the child's lunch should have

cut anything that required a steak knife in adequate peices. A 10yr old unsupervised with a steak knife isn't the smartest thing an adult could do. Arresting her was stupid, but the parents should parent better.

I will not comment on it till I see it. What I think is ridiculous is the reactions prior to the facts...
but that does not surprise me at all

12. Good grief!
Why didn't they just tell the girl & her parents not to bring it to school again!? Having her arrested is so over-the-top, not to mention traumatic for a child who used a utensil for its intended purpose. A fork could be a lethal weapon, so could a sharp pencil.

16. This is one of the reasons I homeschool ..

there is absolutely no common sense used in the application of punishment - and no independent human JUDGMENT (that's right, I used a dirty word) is applied to unique situations, taking into account the student's past behavioral history, etc.

I know ... my opinion is not popular, but it's just my two cents.

This is not in any way meant to be derrogatory to public, charter, and private school teachers. I know many dedicated teachers who have helped my child immensely; schools are overburdened, however. My child is doing extremely well in a homeschooling charter school program, and I have an educational specialist assigned to her (our family), who helps me plan the curriculum and verifies that a certain knowledge level and work completion level has been achieved.

22. Let us not forget the little kid with the chicken finger.
Can't remember all the details but, the story goes like this. Student disciplined for pointing a chicken finger at someone and making shooting like gestures. This is an old story, and I know how detail oriented DU is, and I don't have all the facts, but some crazy fucking teacher was willing to screw over some little boy for being a little boy. I think that we were talking about the war on boys by a fringe group on feminist teachers at the time.
