The tyrant in question is J. Alvin Wilbanks, the President-for-life of the Gwinnett County Board of Education who oversees a budget of over a billion per year.
He's been responsible for siting an elementary school next to an active, out-of-compliance landfill; signing off on falsified crime reports; hounding (with the help of armed school police officers!) dissident teachers and their families; and--most recently--paying over 12 million dollars for land that had purchased only last year for 6 million dollars (see the thread at
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=146x1394...just to cite a few outrages. There are plenty more.
And yet Wilbanks is being considered--get this!--for the 2005 National Superintendent of the Year contest, by the American Association of School Administrators.
I'd strongly urge any Gwinnett DUers to write Mr. Paul Houston, Executive Director of the AASA, to express our outrage. Anyone else with me?

For those who aren't familiar with Wilbanks' wanton disregard for civil liberties, I'd suggest a scan of the Concerned Parents of Georgia forum, linked here:
