Many of you may not know that there is a direct corrollation between an event 5 years ago and Zell Miller's embarrassing slide into right wing madness.
Miller had been experiencing prostate cancer for a while and was told in 1999 by his doctors that the entire gland would have to be removed surgically. Miller became extremely depressed. He had been told that the surgery would be difficult and that he would likely never regain sexual function.
True enough, the surgery was extremely radical and it affected his bladder function as well. Miller spent a considerable period of time out of the public eye while he recovered, but he remained bitter about the effects the surgery had upon him and he became noticably withdrawn and more humorless than usual among those who know him.
As he was still recovering, Sen. Paul Coverdell died and Gov. Roy Barnes appointed Miller to the seat. Miller received congratulations from all his long time supporters, but quickly lost patience with the demands of the new job and the demands of his constituents.
But he confided in a few close friends that he was mainly bitter about being "short changed" as a result of his surgery. Miller admitted that the loss of sexual function and his dependence on "diapers" made him compulsively resentful, occasionally moving him to tears and often unable to control his already explosive temper.
Almost overnight, Miller's behavior became more and more bizarre. He ranted at people and hung up on them during phone conversations. He began to use offensive racial epithets, something he hadn't done in 30 years. He systematically began alienating his few close friends, and his wife and sons began to wonder if he was experiencing the onset of Alzheimer's disease. He soon began using extreme right wing rhetoric, the kind he had labeled his entire career as the rantings of "nut cases".
In short, he found himself unable to psychologically handle the physical effects of a common disease that affects millions of older men.
He simultaneously lost his ability to obtain an erection and control his bladder - and so he transformed himself into a perfect psychological match for the kind of man he had become - a fundamentalist right wing Republican.
He did this just like millions of other impotent, diaper-wearing white men before have done before him.
