This was published in a GA newspaper last week, but I wanted to share it here. I'm originally a Georgia girl who became a Floridian 10 years ago, but with family still there I try to keep up with what is going on.
This session of the Georgia Legislature seems intent in breaking all records for intrusion into the Georgia citizen’s private lives and cloaking the government in secrecy. Infringement of citizen’s rights appears to be gaining ground on these initiatives. All of these actions are supposedly contrary to the basic precepts of the Republican Party.
We have the latest in a long line of bills supposedly attempting to “correct the situation” but instead are really introduced to insure only the “correct” people benefit. I’ll leave it to you to identify the “correct” people. As reported in the Banner-Herald, these latest bills are the ones where you have to present a photo identification to vote. Photo ID would be a Driver’s License, a U.S. Passport, a government employee ID card, etc..
What is ironic about this is to register to vote, or obtain a Driver’s License or a Georgia Identification Card does not require a photo ID. To register to vote only requires affirming age and citizenship, plus providing some identification such as a utility bill. Just present a birth certificate for proof of age and a utility bill for proof of residency, and the driver’s license or identification card will be issued. Try that with voting under these bills and you will be denied the right to vote. I guess we need to require photos on the birth certificates. I know mine would look better than the one on my driver’s license.
Activist judges don’t hold a candle to what this session of the legislature is doing to Georgia residents. This is the first session in 135 years run by the Republicans. Georgia government is becoming, or is already, “Big Brother”. Based on this session’s actions, I would suggest that no Republican politician should ever again refer to the Democratic Party as the Party of Big Government.
