"My broken heart goes out to the family involved for the loss of their son. I cannot imagine how devastated his family must be. I want everyone to please keep that family in their prayers as we deal with this. No parent should ever have to go through this anguish," he said.
Mark Taylor, lieutenant governor since 1998, has announced plans to seek the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Gov. Sonny Perdue next year.
His son was treated at the Medical University of South Carolina and was still being held there under arrest Friday night, said the lieutenant governor's spokesman Rick Dent. He said a bond hearing that had been scheduled for Friday had been postponed.
