I voted in the municipal election
here in Duluth today; there were 3 city council seats on the ballot -- only two contested seats. Two interesting things about the voting process:

  1. No Diebold machines; we used fill-in-the-arrow paper ballots.
  2. In spite of the Federal court ruling that GA's voter ID regulation could not be enforced, there were several signs in the polling place stating ID was required, and I couldn't get a ballot without showing my ID.

1. What kind of ID was allowed and why didn't you use Diebold?
I'm in Athens, GA and every polling place in Athens uses Diebold. We did not vote on anything today.

I thought the other forms of voting were not allowed. It's good if cities and towns can use paper ballots of some sort. We used to be able to show some form of photo ID or utility bills with our name and address as ID. The ols law (still ineffect) allows 13 types of ID.

You should report any problems to the SoS, your congressman and to the city.

2. Used my newly-renewed DL
as I always have; didn't know the old law was still in effect. I was under the impression that there was no ID requirement, since the new law superseded the old one. It was interesting that we used the fill-in-the-arrow ballots; before Diebold came into effect, we used Florida-style punch cards & optical scan ballots until 2002. Evidently they didn't keep any of the old equipment.

3. See this thread on the temporary federal ban on the GA Voter ID law:

Do you still have that horrid woman Republican mayor who was all over Faux News during the "runway bride" madness?

4. Still stuck with the same mayor
IIRC her term will expire in 2006. Runaway Groom lives just outside my subdivision -- I passed his house on the way to the polling place.

5. My teenage stepdaughter lives in Duluth.
One day she had me drive down a side street and pointed and said "Look! That's where the runaway bride lives!" (Me: Arghh!)

I'll bet that they never get married. They are both freaky if you ask me.

6. ID's
You still have to have a FORM of ID, just not a state-issued photo one.

8. My poll worker
specifically said, "photo id." Damn, I wish I had my wits about me and called him on it last night. However North Fulton has a run off, I will pay more attention when I vote then.

7. I was about to ask about the ID
I had not thought of it again until just now. But I was asked for a photo ID in North Fulton. I wish I had thought to question them, but it was after work and I was dashing in before they closed the polls. We used Diebold machines though...
