Several black state lawmakers Wednesday demanded that state Rep. Sue Burmeister (R-Augusta) resign her House leadership position and apologize for comments attributed to her in a leaked U.S. Department of Justice memo regarding the state's law requiring voters to show photo identification.
The memo caused an uproar last week because it stated that Burmeister, the chief sponsor of Georgia's voter ID bill, told the department that if black people in her district "are not paid to vote, they don't go to the polls," and that if fewer black people vote as a result of the new law, it's only because it would end such voting fraud.
State Rep. Douglas Dean (D-Atlanta) called Burmeister the "Trent Lott of the Republican Party" and called for her to resign as majority caucus secretary in the House of Representatives.
"If the Republican Party thinks we're going to allow this lady, our colleague Rep. Burmeister, to get away with this kind of comment, they got a long way coming," Dean said.
