1. I have a feeling that Smith is a Democrat.

From the article:

Snellville Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer said he was very surprised to hear of Smith's arrest.

"It's a shock," he said. "Even though he is a political opponent, I wouldn't wish this on anybody. My heart goes out to the family."

The mayor is a Republican, so I would assume that when he said that "he is a policical opponent," that Smith is a Democrat.

2. It's hard to tell

If he was a Dem, I could see them mentioning that in the article. I am new here and not sure, but there does seem to be more repukes than Dems.
