Please help me with some Atlanta info. I (stupidly) left in '91 & there
was the most awesome BBQ I've ever had right across the street (to the north) of the Georgia Tech campus. I thought the name was Alec's or Alex's, but it was unbelievable and I've been trying find some info, but my internet research has turned up nothing except that apparently Sonny's has taken over the whole Atlanta area (I know this could not be, but all the internet info is Sonny's, Sonny's, Sonny's).
It is/was a tiny hole-in-the-wall place about 4 feet wide and 100 feet long and very Old School. If you ordered a rack of pork ribs, you got the rack, some sauce, and a loaf of white bread. It was 99% To Go, as there is only seating for about 10, and it's not the kind of place you want to spend much time in, anyway. I also think President Carter used to go there.

3. Fourteenth and State?
There was a place at the above location that I remember, I was at ga tech until 93, and still live ing the area. The BBQ place was across state street from Kool Korners Grocery, great cuban sandwiches. If this was the place, I'll try to drive by sometime and see if its still there. I don't remember any place on tenth street however, if it was I'll try to find out.

8. They are either gone of haven't discovered, or need, the power
of the internets. BTW I couldn't find a listing for BBQ or southern cuisine on the site.

15. Nooooooooo!!!
Dagnabit, I've only eaten cubans there for 14 years. Where did you see the news about it? Friends are coming to visit from Portland, gt grads, and that is one thing they miss about Atlanta.

16. I work near there.
We had been going there regularly for sandwiches. There is a new sub shop called Jimmy John's across the street now. Perhaps Kool Korners just didn't want to compete, I don't know.

17. It's open!
A friend is in town to visit and he went and got a sandwich today, 3/24, from Kool Korners.
FYI
Guess it's not closed.

Don't know what the deal there was for a couple of months. Glad to see them back though. Haven't been there again yet.

20. The Havana Sandwich Shop on Buford Hwy. (just north of Lenox)
has pretty damned good Cuban sandwiches, too. Definitely worth checking out if you've not eaten there before.

5. I'm thinking on the north side of Edgewood about Piedmont
Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 10:10 AM by greyhound1966
maybe Peachtree Center?

On Edit: I think the Sauce is/was for sale at Harry's Farmers Market (another thing I really miss, along with Delights of the Garden)

6. That would be south of GT
Piedmont and Edgewood would be north of Georgia State University. Near the Auburn Avenue Curbmarket?

7. Oops it is the north side of 10th Street, got the wrong map.
It's one of those situations where I could get in the car and find it (if I still lived there), just don't remember street names and don't know the address.

9. Is this it? Bobby and June's
Bobby and June's Kountry Kitchen

Hours open:
Mon – Fri 5:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Sat 5:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Accepted payment:
No credit cards

About a mile west of the downtown connector and not too far from Georgia Tech is Bobby and June’s Kountry Kitchen. The restaurant is a country cabin, complete with rocking chairs on the front porch and country hams hanging from the ceiling. They offer a large menu of Southern classics - biscuits, fried chicken, fried okra, green beans cooked with fatback and collard greens. It’s hard to stay focused on barbeque with a Southern menu such as that! Nevertheless, they serve tender barbecued pork with a thick, rich sauce that has a nice balance of tomato, sweetness, pepper and other seasonings. Top it all off with banana pudding and leave satisfied.

10. Sounds nice, but not the place. This was a literal hole in the wall
Long, dark, and narrow. The left side was a counter in front of the BBQ pit, about 30 ft long and half a dozen two top tables on the left.
Very limited menu BBQ beef ribs, pork ribs, chicken, and pulled pork and beef and brunswick stew. The sides, if they had any were not memorable and every order came with a loaf of white bread. I could swear it was called alex or alec's BBQ. It had its 15 minutes when Carter was President and he said it was one of his favorites.

11. It's not Harold's is it?
I know it's further away, but it's close enough to the Tech campus. The description of the place doesn't sound right, but it's a popular place with people from Tech and politicians because of it's closeness to the capital.

12. Well this is what I found

Aleck's Barbecue Heaven - Atlanta
This classic hole-in-the-wall fits the bill when you're looking for good barbecue.

A time to reflect

We who live to eat have long heard such doom-saying. Over the years, I have even dished my share.

An accounting of losses, measured in shuttered rib shacks, cafes and boardinghouses, stings: I pine for Aleck's Barbecue Heaven, the Atlanta joint that staked a reputation on hickory-smoked pork and vinegary Come Back sauce. I miss Len Berg's, the alleyway bunker in Macon where, during the swelter of summer, they served a cold plate of fried chicken, deviled eggs and a pimento cheese sandwic

Alright, if this isn't it oh well, I give up. The ajc.com article makes it sound like it is closed.

13. Thank you very much.
I think we have a winner, although I could've sworn you could the Georgia Tech campus, it was over 15 years ago. This certainly sounds like the place and I'm very sad to hear of its demise.
Again, Thank you all for your efforts.
