Aw, crap. Only Franken remains at WWAA 1690.
I didn't see this one coming. I was hoping that the whole AAR shebang was going to move to 1160.

Mind you, I like Franken, but to lose the rest of the programming totally sucks.

I hope AAR can find another station in Atlanta. There's so much hideous right-wing talk here--surely that's saturated, and there are listeners who'll tune in to a station with a decent signal.

6/7: Al Franken staying at 1690

By Rodney Ho | Wednesday, June 7, 2006, 02:28 PM

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Joe Weber, who recently purchased WWAA-AM/1690, will be migrating his eclectic music format (everything from Pavoratti to Springsteen, Beethoven to Aretha) from 1160 starting Monday June 12. 1690 has run liberal talk show syndicate Air America the past couple of years. Weber is planning to keep only Al Franken from noon to 3 p.m. He says his focus is on mornings and drivetime and by keeping Franken, he hopes to grab a few of those Air America fans. This does mean no more access to Rachel Maddow, Janeane Garafalo, Jerry Springer and Randi Rhodes unless you have XM Satellite radio or you can listen online. 1160 will simulcast until he creates a new format there. He wouldn’t say what he’s going to put there.

I guess there's still a chance that 1160 will become a full-time AAR outlet.

But in the meantime, not having Rachel for my morning drives totally sucks!

1. I'm with you.
Rachel and Randi are the only things that can keep my daily commute bearable. Well, sometimes Sam and Janeane, when I have to work late. But to lose all of the AAR programming would be a true loss for our community. I really hope 1160 picks AAR up, and if not, I may seriously look into getting XM or Sirius if they have an AAR station.

I would hate to drive in the mornings having to choose from Steve and Vicki, The Bert Show, Kelly and Alpha, or <gasp> Morning X! That would absolutely be a fate worse than death. :puke:

2. And for the evenings, Sean and the Savage Weener!
Surely you do not want to listen to the drek that passes for Atlantametro radio programming. It's been clinically proven to destroy brain cells.

If you have an MP3 player, there are the podcasts of Mike Malloy's show archived at

http://whiterosesociety.org/Malloy.html

I'm finding it makes for a good commuter companion, although I'm playing catch-up since I'm always a day or two behind. (I'd never really heard much of Mike until recently, but it's some good stuff, and he's a local guy.)

I may go the XM route myself; there's a lot of good programming beyond AAR (I'd like all the baseball broadcasts, for example.)

4. In Athens, two AM stations broadcast Boortz in the AM. :(
:grr:
Then, it's Insanity in the afternoon and at might it's Savage Weiner on 750 AM. 1340 Am carries the odius Laura Ingraham (they used to carry some guy name dBruce Williams who wasn't totally awful but he was conservative. He was more of a financial planner than a pundit.)

1530 Am from Cinncinatti, Ohio comes in gret here in the evening but they DO not carry Malloy. They have that annoying Lionel guy instead. 1530 AM reruns Randi from 6-10 PM so you can catch her over the air if youy don't have XM or a computer stream. (I think they carry Shcultz during Randi's slot.)

I'm gonna miss Ring of Fire and Laura Flanders on Air Atlanta.
Maybe we can beg and plead for another Air Atlanta station.

5. "That annoying Lionel guy" -- ok, I chuckled...
I remember Lionel from living in NYC and hearing him on the big talk radio outlet there. I found him very annoying at the time. He came off wishy-washy, a little afraid of offending anyone, lest he be categorized as "too liberal", it seemed.

And yeah, I'd much prefer to hear Mike and "end {my} day SCREAMING," as his voice-babe puts it.

But Lionel, he's kinda grown on me, having heard him more than a few times in recent months. When he decides to take on political issues, he's usually pretty good, and a stickler for the facts as he knows them. He shocked me a bit last month by devoting an entire three-hour show to airing alternative theories about the 9/11 attacks; he treated those theories with more respect than a lot of AAR hosts.

I guess this is just a longish way of saying you might want to give his show a bit of a chance if you haven't really, yet. I do know his voice is rather grating, probably more so to Southern ears!

7. Mike Malloy & I talked about Lionel at the Atlanta DU meetup.
Mike pretty much had the same opinion as you: sort of wishy-washy and afraid of offending anyone.

That said, I adore Mike Malloy. He and Kathy rock. Mr. CB thinks Kathy's hot! ;) Mike is the best: he tells it like it is with passion and righteous outrage. Love him.

Lionel isn't all bad, but Mike is, hands down, the best. :)

8. Morning radio in Atlanta sucks!
Try "Good Morning Blues" on 89.3 FM!

WRFG...Atlanta's station for progressive information.

3. Goddammitall.
I am pissed. Atlatna is the home of Mike and kathy Malloy and one of Air America's founders lives in the Atlatna area. Why the fuck can't AA get and keep a station in one of Americas biggest and bluest Southern cities?

6. I'll be podcasting and hoping AAR finds a full time home.
With the executive brain trust and Malloy here, I have to think this isn't something they're going to take lying down. Considering how important this metro area is as a growing center of progressive activity, I just gotta believe.

But I share your frustration, believe me!
