Primary election results
http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/election04/charts/ussenatechart.html

Supreme Court Justice Leah Sears defeats Brantley.

Yes Yes Yes!

Sonny Perdue & other Republicans had dumped a lot of money into Brantley's bid, & the GA Christian Coalition had endorsed him (largely b/c of Sears' positions on gay rights).

For the Senate, looks like a runoff between Majette & Oxford.

On the GOP side, looks like Isakson defeated Herman Cain & Mac Collins. No surprise here, but I'm somewhat glad Cain was defeated, as many Freepers had embraced him as certain win. Sorry, guys.

1. Yeah, Sonny left a message on my machine yesterday.
Told me that Brantley had "conservative values".

Thanks for reminding me to vote for Sears, Sonny.

Sears is on her way to becoming the nation's first Female African-American State Supreme Court Chief Justice.

2. the good and bad news in these results..
The good news is that McKinney, Barrow, Crawford, and Delamar will not have to worry about runoffs. In the 8th district, the Republicans will face a runoff, giving the Democrat a shot of winning this open district!

The bad news is that Republicans will unite around Isakson, while Majette and Oxford rip each other apart in the runoff. I predict the race between these two candidates will be extremely close, with most of the Squires voters going with Majette while the Boyd, Finkelstein, and Baier supporters will probably vote with Oxford. This leaves them with a 50-50 split..with a few Cottingham and Patel voters ultimately picking the winner of an uphill battle.

So the good news is that Democrats may pick up one or more Congressional seats and some state Senate seats, but the bad news is that Zell Miller's Senate seat is likely to remain Republican along with the PSC.

3. Don't be so sure
I worked on the Squires campaign and I would rather pull my fingernails off with a pair of needle nose pliers before I vote for Majette. She's got bad things in her past (worse than what this bunch of yahoos threw at her) and you can damn sure bet that the Republican hate machine is digging away already. Serves her right.

4. After the last four years who can trust conventional wisdom?
Edited on Thu Jul-22-04 05:02 AM by flaminbats
Polls predicted Gore would carry Florida in 2000. They indicated Barnes and Cleland would be re-elected in 2002. And this year the media claimed that Mary Squires was one of the three leading Democratic candidates. Yet Jim Boyd, who participated in none of the debates, came in third in the primaries. State Sen. Mary Squires came in fourth, five points behind him!

The media was predicting that black voters would make up a majority of the Democratic primary vote for the first time in history, but the reality is this percentage has dropped from the primaries in 2002. Polls did not reveal that McKinney, Barrow, and Sears would win by such overwhelming majorities.

I think the last elections have proved that we are living in an era which polls are now obsolete.

5. I agree. I think polls are a waste of time.

6. We NEED Majette on this ticket
An Oxford vs. Isakson campaign will be over before it's begun. He has no experience and will be attacked as a big-money Democrat who's bought his way on to the ticket (Isakson's no better, but he's been in politics for thirty years). I'm proud to have supported Squires, as she's defended health care & equal rights from fierce Republican assaults. However, Majette is my next choice. She has the experience and has pledged to support hard issues like gay rights. Oxford seems reluctant to make a stand on those issues & is promoting himself as a moderate. I think a woman on the ballot could make a difference in November, as there's never been (to my recollection, at least) a woman up for the Senate before. Many women in predominantly conservative areas might vote Majette as they're weary of only men running. Sears victory might support this theory, as she had to have support from Republicans to win. Guess we'll see how it plays out Aug. 10.

7. I don't know about Isakson winning so easily.
The time might have come when people prefer the "no political experience" candidate. I know I do. State & Federal need replaced.
