Linder Misses Key Vote to Attend Rally: John Linder misses key vote on minimum wage and estate tax to attend "FairTax" rally.
Lilburn, Georgia, August 2, 2006 –
On July 29, 2006, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 5970 which would increase the minimum wage and substantially reduce the estate tax. Both measures will have a profound effect on certain groups of citizens and the federal budget. The minimum wage increase will provide an average $1,200 benefit to 6.6 million individuals, while the estate tax reduction will provide an average $1.4 million benefit to 8,200 beneficiaries. Regardless of one’s position for or against these measures, this is an important and some might say historic piece of legislation. How did John Linder vote? He didn’t. Instead of attending to the people’s business, John Linder was in Orlando attending a rally for his not-so-FairTax.
On May 25, just after a similar “FairTax” rally in Atlanta, the Democratic candidate for U.S. Congress in the 7th District, Allan Burns, challenged incumbent John Linder to debate the so-called "FairTax". In response, John Linder’s spokesman, Derick Corbett, was quoted in the Gwinnett Daily Post as follows: "We haven’t thought about a debate with him
. We’ve just got so much going on in Congress.” Ironic, that John Linder would skip voting on such an important piece of legislation to attend a dog and pony show for the “FairTax” in Orlando. John Linder is too busy in Congress to even consider “debating” the FairTax, but shirks those same responsibilities on a critical piece of legislation to attend a “rally”. After passage of the legislation and John Linder’s recorded “no vote”, Allan Burns observed “this is a clear example of the fraudulent nature of the so-called FairTax. Proponents such as John Linder and Neal Boortz hold rallies and debate themselves, but are unwilling to debate others in open forums. They prefer to keep the public in the dark about the true nature of their regressive proposal that will raise taxes on a majority of taxpayers and create the largest entitlement in U.S. history.”
