1. No sympathy from me
She described the acts the boys pleaded guilty to — taking the puppy and smearing paint on it, trying to set it
on fire, hog tying its feet with duct tape and binding its snout before stuffing it into a searing hot gas oven —
as "malicious, unbridled cruelty."

people who do these thing to animals often end hurting people.

6. I have to agree with you
This wasn't just neglect or thoughtlessness; they were torturing the dog for the fun of it. Quite sick.

Also, it sounds as though they were chronic offenders in other ways. According to the article, the sentence was increased due to taking into account other offences of 'burglary, criminal damage to property and child cruelty'.

So they weren't just potentially going to end up harming people; they'd already done so: 'child cruelty'.

Far as I'm concerned, 10 years is a slap on the wrist for what these assholes did. Now, if your point is that white offenders would have gotten off with community service, I can't argue with that.

8. I was about to comment on the inequity of justice in the south. But
with-held comment because I was afraid of taking fire from the southern contingents. But, I am afraid that I agree. If they were white boys, they would be doing community service in a kennel instead of jail time.

What the "president" is doing in our name deserves more than a life sentence. But the chances are that he will live out his pitiful excuse for a life in comfort and luxury.

52. Here's your fire from the Southern contingent
Your "theory" is bullshit. Here in Atlanta, there have been a series of animal cruelty cases that just seem to be escalating. This is by far the worst though. The state legislature has increasingly made it more of a possibility of doing some serious time for such cases.

I don't care if they are beige, purple, polka dotted or striped. These "boys" are despicable human beings and deserve far worse than the sentence they got.

same as they put the poor dogs thru. 10 years IMHO is much to lenient .... Possibly life in prison would have been my choice.... That just sucks big time! Of course I happen to be an animal lover...

12. two young lives-----forever lost.

.......Prosecutors spent two hours Friday showing the lengthy juvenile records of the Moulders, saying that the puppy's grisly death was an escalation of a dangerous pattern established long ago.

Joshua Moulder, the younger brother, had been in an out of psychiatric care and state youth detention centers for years, records showed. He had been accused of breaking into homes, arson, threatening to beat and kill his own mother and trashing a foster home.

Justin Moulder, while in foster care, had been charged with aggravated sexual battery of a 3-year-old boy, prosecutors said. He was charged as an adult but prosecuted as a minor. He also was convicted of shoplifting as an adult.

Joshua Moulder said nothing at Friday's sentencing. Justin Moulder read a brief statement, apologizing for their actions.

"We are here to ask for forgiveness and a second chance at life," the elder brother said. "If I am given another chance, I will make up for it."

14. I investigate this stuff for a living.
A few points from the link.

The felony animal cruelty charge carried a maximum of 5 years in prison. However, the time in jail increased because of charges for burglary, criminal damage to property and child cruelty.

Prosecutors spent two hours Friday showing the lengthy juvenile records of the Moulders, saying that the puppy's grisly death was an escalation of a dangerous pattern established long ago.

Joshua Moulder, the younger brother, had been in an out of psychiatric care and state youth detention centers for years, records showed. He had been accused of breaking into homes, arson, threatening to beat and kill his own mother and trashing a foster home.

The pleas came Jan. 26 as defense lawyers and prosecutors prepped for a final pre-trial motion before the retrial, which was set to begin Jan. 29. The blind guilty pleas entered to nine felony counts allowed the judge to decide how many years each youth will serve.

So the cruelty gets the headline but there were other charges in play. To call it 10 years for the puppy is not accurate.

We use a 3P model for our recommendations for sentencing, Punishment, Prohibition and Public Awareness. Public Awareness can be defined as specific deterrence or general deterrence. It is necessary for people to know just what we, as people, do to the animals we have domesticated.

The neglect cases are bad enough, the conscious abuse is an order of magnitude worse.

Sorry, I'm no animal rights activist, I find most of them misinformed and anthropomorphic, but in this instance I'm on the side of the puppy.

would be fair, but I am afraid that our justice system is no longer restorative, it is only punitive. These boys need therapy, intense and strong. And they needed and need love. They now have no opportunity for any of these.

35. They didn't get what they truly deserve
And I doubt SERIOUSLY that a pair of white kids would get a lighter sentence for this --

"She described the acts the boys pleaded guilty to — taking the puppy and smearing paint on it, trying to set it on fire, hog tying its feet with duct tape and binding its snout before stuffing it into a searing hot gas oven — as "malicious, unbridled cruelty."

This was premeditated brutalization of a helpless animal. IMO real justice would be giving them a taste of what that puppy had to go through.

Yeah, there's racism in the South. on BOTH sides.

45. there are a few comments like yours in this thread.
I don't know if it's true or not, I doubt it is. But it would be nice to see some sources when people make such scandalous claims. The law on animal cruelty is too lenient to whoever perpetrates that atrocity. These kids got more because of a pattern of behavior, and their likely being a danger to society. Nothing to do with race.
