Groups plan war protests
By Camie Young Senior Writer camie.young@gwinnettdailypost.com
LAWRENCEVILLE -
For years, Dot Shaw has driven outside her home county to march in protest of the war in Iraq.
But beginning today, she'll hold her placard high near her Centerville home.
Shaw will lead a crowd of at least a dozen protesters, who want American troops to come home from war-torn Iraq.
"There are a lot of people who are opposed to the war. ... People think they are the only ones," she said. "I was excited to find Gwinnett citizens like myself, who cared enough to commit to show up at a vigil and hold a sign."
Last week, during impromptu protests, Shaw said she heard some negative comments from passers-by, but a lot of people honked horns in encouragement. She believes politicians are beginning to listen to the signs of displeasure, and she plans to deliver a petition to Gwinnett's senior congressman, John Linder, R-Duluth.
"I think the groundswell is getting so that they have to hear it, but whether or not they'll listen. .... hopefully, they will," she said.
The first protest will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. today at the corner of Centerville Highway and Centerville-Rosebud Road in southern Gwinnett.
The Georgia Peace and Justice Coalition and Democracy for America are coordinating another rally from 5 to 6 p.m. Friday at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard at Medlock Bridge Road, and a candlelight vigil is scheduled for 6 to 7 p.m. Monday - the fourth anniversary of the war - at 5100 Annistown Road.
"I really fear what a surge of troops and military spending will do to our already huge budget deficit," said another protester, Mafori Moore, a retired math professor from Snellville. "Also, I oppose any attacks on Iran."
