Somebody needs to get in touch with the Martin Campaign
I just went through Early county where there is a high population of African-Americans yet all I saw were Saxby yard signs (that disn't say that he was a repub). Martin needs to get more signs out down here and express boldly that he is a democrat because otherwise I fear that shameless might steal these votes due to voter ignorance.

1. Fair point, but do folks REALLY not know Saxby's a repub?
I'm sure that will be hammered home time and again in the runoff campaign.

And I think the runoff is going to be huge. I'd be shocked if the runoff didn't become a national race. I wouldn't be surprised to see Obama down here campaigning for Martin, or at least a very high-level surrogate or three.

2. I'm expecting Obama to come and probably several others as well
I think we'll see Hillary here too telling everyone she needs Jim Martin to help her in the Senate. We're about to be put on a very big pedestal.

3. Some really don't know because there's a high percentage of first time voters
Early county isn't in the Albany or Columbus media market. As a matter of fact their local news comes from Alabama because they're a border county so alot of people there voted for Obama and stopped at that because they didn't get to see the Martin ads.

4. You are correct.
There has been precious little Martin presence in SW Ga. throughout the campaign cycle.

Some of us are trying to organize (a little to NW of Early) and will try to cover the entire region.

Can anyone help?

5. If Martin wants to win he really needs to increase black turn out in Dourghty, Early and Columbus
Vernon Jones was right Martin doesn't know how to win. It's like he hasn't realized that he needs to turn out the black vote to stand a chance and so far he's relied heavily on President Obama to do it for him. Now Martin can attack shameless but he can't rally the base on his own and by December alot of the whites will turn against him out of an Obama backlash. Martin needs to go other places to campaign than ATL.

6. Exactly. We'll see if Martin wants to win as badly as we want him to win.

7. Thank you for this post. I’d like to know more about Martin.
I’ve lived in NYC for the last 26 years or so, but my immediate family is in GA. We have opposing political views. My parents are lovely people, but they are the cliché low information voter. Consequently, we try not to talk politics because their ignorance just feeds my audacity. It’s not pretty, but we each know how we voted in this presidential election.

I’m not one to gloat, so I haven’t called. They called me on Saturday to acknowledge Obama’s victory and hoped for the best. It’s as close to ‘humble pie” as we ever get, but it’s a little glimmer.

Somewhat touched by the token olive branch, I brought up the impending run-off to test the earnestness of their professed hope. Their first reaction was that Martin was a crook and their neighbor across the street knew people that said he was unpredictable. That’s it. That’s all they know. And it's good enough for them.

I don’t live there, so I don’t know what any of this is supposed to be based on. If anybody can coach me on an intervention it would be appreciated, but I think this only confirms that Martin’s prospects are thin for the run-off.

8. For starters take a look at his opponent, Saxby Chambliss...
When Saxby Chambliss got elected the first time he ran against Senator Max Cleland. Cleland is a bona-fide war here, lost 3 limbs while serving this country in Vietnam. Saxby Chambliss, on the other hand, used multiple deferments to avoid service. Thus, it was quite unbelievable when Saxby Chambliss managed to paint Max Cleland as un-American an unpatriotic and win the last election. He's got his lie machine in high gear again putting out smears against Jim Martin.

Jim Martin, despite having survived polio as a child, still managed to serve in Vietnam. You can find more on his website www.martinforsenate.com.

10. Just watch the Chambliss ad trashing Max Cleland and try not to puke
Here it is in all its disgusting glory:

This is part of the smear campaign that helped Chambliss unseat Cleland.

I would vote for just about anybody running against Chambliss. It's especially easy to support Martin, because he's a good man with a solid record of public service. And Martin would make a great U.S. Senator.

I'd even suggest calling his office and talking to the folks there. They've always been pretty good about answering questions.
