Anyone planning to vote for Denise Majette (for Dem Senator)?

Majette left a HORRIBLE impression on me when she campaigned against McKinney a couple years ago. A few days ago, I saw her on the news talking about "rightwingers" and the flaws of the Bush Administration. Is she for real or is she playing a role? Is anyone planning to vote for her? Miller has not (will not) endorse her.

I live in her district. She has a very strong liberal voting record during her two years in the House.
I will probably also vote for McKinney to get her old seat back, as well. Go Majette!

Republicans crossed over to vote for her to remove McKinney. This, however, was no reflection on Majette.

6. Probably, Isackson

The repubs have about five running in their primary.
Johnny Isackson has the highest name recognition factor.
He will probably get their nom.
Dems will probably nominate Oxford, Majette, or Squires.
So far, though, no major campaigning by any of them (at least through media buys)...the primary is July 27th.

She's been better than I expected her to be in the 4th CD seat, although quiet as a mouse. I'm glad to have the opportunity to put Cynthia back to work for us, and I'll take Majette for the Senate seat.

edit: actually, I'll probably vote for Mary Squires in the primary, but I'll vote for Majette in Nov. if she wins.

Since Majette received much attention for beating McKinney in 2002, she clearly has more name recognition among Georgians. Squires has only been in the GA Senate for a brief time and has not accumulated a large following outside of Gwinnett. I will probably vote for her in July because she has supported state health care to elderly Georgians and has fought to reduce juvenile violence, both important social concerns. However, Majette will definitely attract more black voters (a large portion of GA democrats). If Majette wins, she'll get my vote in November.

13. About Majette, Oxford and Squires

I can't say why I know this, but trust me when I say it comes from the inside of GA politics. Many in the party think Majette is "crazy" (that is the exact word that was used)for jumping from the House seat to a Senate race. Also, she's angered many who donated to her House re-election campaign, then switched over to the Senate and took that money with her (over $400,000). Not nice.
Others feel that the Republicans can't wait to get their hands on Oxford. The only good thing he has going for him is that he can finance his own campaign and buy the best people to do the dirty work for him.
About Squires: she angered the party last year by jumping in without their seal of approval, but she's proving to be the one that makes the most sense. She actually does have huge name recognition in South GA, family ties and massive door to door campaign that's been ongoing for months. She's got more legislative experience than either Majette or Oxford and she's got more military experience than anyone running in this race, Democrat or Republican.

The debates are coming up soon. So far things are staying all nicey-nice and people are trying to keep it clean, but wife-beating and other not so legal activities could come up at any time.

The real question is whether Republicans can out-pace the Democrats with their rabid self-destructive tendencies. If Republicans destroy themselves, then how does that reflect on their ability to govern?

She is a very nice person and a veteran. I think she would be great but again the name recognition is not on her side.

10. Cliff Oxford may get at least one DU primary vote...

Of all the Democratic candidates running in Georgia..Oxford is the one Repukes fear most. They are even running a puppet primary candidate to do nothing but spread lies about him. Cliff Oxford was encouraged to run by Jon Corzine, who heads the recruiting effort for Democratic candidates in the Senate, and by Jimmy Carter. One reason Repukes fear Oxford..he can put at least four million dollars into this campaign. Another reason is that he has no Congressional voting record to be attacked with. This makes both Mac Collins and Isakson more vulnerable to Oxford's campaign in the fall. And another reason Repukes fear Oxford is because of his south Georgia roots. For any Democrat to win this Senate campaign such a candidate must be able to connect with both the rural and urban voters.

But it is essential for Oxford is to strike the right cord with primary voters. No longer does protecting military installations and bringing home bacon win votes. Georgians want honesty from their public officials, they want morality, and they want a public servant..not another preacher. Republicans won in 2000 and 2002 because of stained dresses, the state flag, and because of bold promises. Now these promises have been broken, the Republicans are apologists for behavior which most Georgians find to be morally criminal, and Georgians are angry about bread and butter issues not what the colors are on an unnoticed flag!

15. Oxford hires savy staff

Case in point on the Oxford strength is that he has the money to buy some interesting staff additions. Creative Loafings political reporter recently left Creative Loafing to work on Oxford's campaign. Granted being the political reporter in the alternative weekly probably isn't a high paying job, but he has some valuable insights I'm sure.

Squires is interesting, and less family ties in politics. I'd vote for Majette also, yes she took advantage of a situation and used "dirty" money and votes to beat McKinney, but I'm just thrilled she left to run for Senate. And it could be valuable, though I wonder if the the Congressional Black Caucus really wants to spend money on this race.

Though imagine if McKinney and Majette win the primary? Could it be an opportunity to turn out the vote? I wish Nadine Thomas had stayed in the Senate race instead of jumping to run against McKinney (who in the past has helped her). McKinney would have been in a great position to help turn out the vote for Nadine in November.

Something Majette didn't do for Cleland in the November election last time.

Majette's voting record hasn't been perfect and she should have been louder since its the only true progressive district in GA. John Lewis already has the role of the bridge builder, the understated quiet liberal. The 4th district needs to have someone to deliver the message.
