early voting in GA.
Edited on Sat Oct-23-04 03:35 PM by kevinam
I was curious about something. I was checking the Secretary of State website. The website says that you can vote the week prior to the election, starting monday Oct 25, I imagine. Does anyone know much about early voting. The website said you go to your county voter registration office. Fill out a form, present ID, and they will give you a ballot. I am curious though. Will this be a diebold type of machine with no paper trail, or will it be a paper "absentee" type of ballot. Does anyone know??? If it is a paper ballot, I would think that should encourage early, or as it is called "advance" voting, that way you can be pretty certain your vote is counted.

Kevin.

1. I'm not positive, but I know I read somewhere that a voter
would fill out a paper ballot and later, someone would enter the info into one of the electronic machines. To be certain, you probably need to call the registration office on Mon. morning and ask.

I think they are planning of doing the same thing with the absentee ballots...entering them into the electronic system prior to 11/2.

For what it's worth, I plan on voting at the Hall County registration office on Wed. I really am hoping that the turnout will be very high this year, and I really hate waiting in long lines for ANYTHING! I'm hoping to avoid the long wait by using the advance voting option!

2. no paper
No Diebold 'type' but straight up Diebold computers are set up in each office.

I'm basing this on AJC pictures of early voters past, using computers. So it's not 100%.

6. For early voting, any of the four locations.
Personally, I would avoid that one that is in a police precinct in South Dekalb though.

9. I think it might be intimidating to some voters,
and I think they should find another location.

10. I went to that one yesterday.
It's across Memorial Dr. from the jail, in the same bldg. as Tom Scott's office. My DH & I waited for about 1/2 hr. yesterday, filled out a couple of forms, & used the Diebold-type machines. We had no problems & the turnout was great! Very motivated electorate.

19. Clarification
I think some people may be getting the South DeKalb and Memorial drive locations mixed up...

There are four locations you can vote in DeKalb County:

1. The Memorial Drive location in the Government Annex Building (across from the County Jail). This is the one where mirandawright voted yesterday and where I voted in the primaries. It is just off I-285 and just to the ESE of Avondale Estates. Maybe we could call this the "East DeKalb" location.

2. Brook Run: 4770 North Peachtree Road, Dunwoody. This would be the "North DeKalb" location.

3. Downtown Decatur: Courthouse Annex B170: 556 North McDonough Street, Decatur. This would be the "Central DeKalb" location. If anyone encounters huge lines there, it might be worth heading 5-10 minutes east to the Memorial Drive location. Last night when the polls closed there was an estimated 3.5 hour wait time still to vote at this location.

4. South Dekalb Police Precinct: 2853 Candler Road, Decatur. This would be the "South DeKalb" location in the actual Police Precinct which MGKrebs points out might be an intimidating location (if, like me, you are no necessarily comfortable hanging around near a police station!).

Hope that helps clarify things for anyone still waiting to vote early today!

8. I plan to vote this Tuesday if possible..
what if I go to vote again on election day, and they still let me? Would they be violating the law by allowing me to vote twice, or would I?

14. At my regular polling place..Not registrar's it is Diebold
I had never voted like this before. It was paper and you used a marker to vot for who you wanted to and they put your name on the outside of the yellow envelope
that went inside a white envelope before you dropped it in the lockbox.

your name on the outside that you voted. Still secret. In fact you had to put your ballot in a white envelope before you put it in the yellow envelope.
