Shrugging off safety and liability concerns, the state Board of Education last night voted 9-0 to make surfing an official high school sport.
The decision means that Hawai'i becomes the first state in the country to sanction surfing, a sport that has been part of Hawai'i's culture since ancient times.Radical, dude! Now, the important question on everyone's minds: Who will emerge as the powerhouses -- the Kahuku and St. Louis, if you will -- of high school surfing?
Well, Kahuku itself won't be shabby; bear in mind that Sunset falls within its district. Likewise, Wai'anae, right down the road from Makaha, will be in the mix. Tiny Waialua, which covers Hale'iwa, may yet have its day in the sun. Expect landlocked Leilehua and Mililani to stink up the joint :-)
Does Bethany Hamilton go to public school (she's a fundie)? Is she even high school age yet? Every sports journalist in the country wants to know...
