WAILUKU - A Kihei student, Jana Pierce-van Loon, was named winner of the ACLU of Hawaii Youth Award in a ceremony held Saturday at the state Supreme Court building in Honolulu.

Pierce-van Loon was selected for the annual award for demonstrating a strong commitment to civil liberties.

A graduate of Baldwin High School, Pierce-van Loon wore a T-shirt with "Evil-Doer" written in a heart across the front and a paragraph on the back stating her view about the state of affairs in the country. She said the T-shirt was worn to protest the USA Patriot Act's impact on personal freedoms.
