"Emergency" sewer work to benefit *Wal-Mart*?!
Un-frickin'-believable. The city is about to turn my commute back into a Manhattan-style nightmare, just as it was when I lived in Makiki -- all to benefit a bunch of fundies I don't want here, anyway!

http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2004/Aug/17/ln/ln20a.html

Engineers hope emergency repairs to a sewer line on Kapi'olani Boulevard will be finished by mid-October, before the scheduled opening of a nearby Wal-Mart store and the start of the holiday shopping season, officials said yesterday.

"We're trying to get everything done in 60 days to beat the rush," city Environmental Services Director Frank Doyle said.

Starting today, the city will close the two center lanes of Kapi'olani Boulevard between Atkinson Drive and Kaheka Street for the repair work. That will leave two lanes of traffic open in either direction on the busy commercial thoroughfare....

Looks to me like the "emergency" was that they needed to hook Sprawl-Mart up to the lines, and found out they couldn't handle it. And since it's an "emergency", guess who pays for it? Hint: Not Sprawl-Mart.

"There's going to be some disruption, of course, but we're trying to keep it to a minimum," Doyle said.

With that dry tone of understatement, Doyle would be perfect as Bush*'s press secretary: "There's going to be some loss of jobs, of course, but..."

When they just repaved the section of Kapi'olani closer to me, traffic was backed up for ten minutes at eight o'clock at night :scared:

1. It Must Really Be Changing
I haven't been home in 7 years, I never knew how many changes have taken place.

2. I sympathize with your commute....
It seems the traffic is getting worse, if possible. Lately, I ve been thinking of moving up to da country...the noise here is bad.

Wal-Mart...I hate them...& I hate all the big box stores. When I first saw Home Depot on Maui, I knew we were doomed.

3. We should ask our legislators to front load the dump fees on this stuff
so much opala will be coming out of this store, soon to land in the landfill.
(Landfull!)
We should add more $ to the price when we buy it just to pay for the extra landfill we''ll need for all that junk!!
Auwe no ho'i! And right on top the iwi!
