Local kids arrested in NYC
from Kyle:
Aloha Kakou
Some Hawaii kids were minding their own business in NYC.

Our young peace activist, Annie was arrested today along with Summer
from Progress Hawai'i, Eric (Refuse and Resist), Jeff Paterson, and others
while sitting on a lawn. The police ordered people to leave but blocked exit
routes. They threw some sort of netting over the group to capture them for
arrest (like slave hunters did to Africans).

We think that they were rounded up in a large warehouse type of space and may have to spend the night in detention until they can be booked.

We will let folks know more as soon as we have more information. Let's keep
them all in our prayers. Mahalo.

3. If not they should contact a pro-bono lawyer ( sp ? ) if they need help ..
If they are not charged with anything , they should be free . They should not be kept at a detention center for a long period of time without being charged for something serious . Come on , whatever happened to protesting . This country is crazy . Hope they get back to your state safely .

4. A lawyer isn't much good in protest arrests unless...
the arresting officer sets standard bail. Even if bail is set, you first must be booked. I don't know about NY specifically, but they have up to 36 hours to book you in emergency situations such as mass arrests. IMO there is no chance the arrested protesters will be introduced to the general population of any facility. Once you are arrested, the arresting jurisdiction is your guardian and is legally responsible for your welfare under penalty of law. NY is not like many small towns were incarceration laws are ignored. They have been sued more times than slippery sly the used car salesman.

My educated guess is that your friends will come home with good health and a great story to tell.

5. They'll be processed and released with an appearance date
misdemeaner
They can opt to pay a fine if they don't want to stick around to fight the charge.

Besides punishing the miscreant...It's a good source of renenue.

6. Some usefull info from CNN
Most of those arrested have been taken for processing to Pier 57 on the west side of Manhattan. The three-story, block-long pier has been converted to a holding pen especially for those protesting the convention so that city precincts won't be overrun by waves of arrests. The pier can hold 1,000 people and will remain in operation until the end of the U.S. Tennis Open.
