Poll question: People on O'ahu - who do you trust to be your mayor?

So, who will it be?

Mayoral candidates spar over landfill, land rights

Honolulu's top mayoral candidates differed last night over condominium conversions, landfills and leadership experience during a televised debate at the Hawai'i Theatre.

Several hundred people packed the vintage building on Bethel Street to watch Duke Bainum, Mufi Hannemann and Frank Fasi spar in the 90-minute event, broadcast live on KHON 2.

All three candidates called for better maintenance of the city's roads and sewers and said they oppose legalizing same-sex marriage, but they differed over other issues. The crowd was largely partisan, and audience members repeatedly cheered for favored candidates.

Bainum said the city should retain its condominium leasehold conversion law, known as Chapter 38, while Hannemann said he supports efforts to repeal it.

1. "Kanaloa" on Bainum
"Kanaloa" is a vote you can still cast at the Legislature, meaning "Yes, with reservations": a holdover from the monarchy era.

I've been pretty firmly in the Bainum camp (more precisely, the ABM -- Anyone But Mufi -- camp) all long. Then just the other day Duke blindsided me with this:

http://starbulletin.com/2004/09/10/news/index1.html

Bainum also said he has no plans to run for governor in 2006, "and quite frankly, I believe Gov. Lingle is doing a very good job."

:puke: :puke: :puke:

Quite frankly, I believe that anyone who would say that in public needs to be examined for signs of debilitating Repuke Toady Syndrome. :-)

So we have a choice between him and Mufi, who features a picture of himself with Ronald Reagan in his ads -- or Fasi, who seems to have been captured by the fundies somewhere along the way. Ye gods.

But for Pete's sake, don't forget to vote on Saturday. A low turnout could let Mufi get over the top just by bringing out his hardcore base. It wouldn't be pretty.
