1. Not a DUer but try some of these places
I've checked online and they have rooms available:

http://www.daysinn.com/DaysInn/control/Booking/property_info?propertyId=06852&brandInfo=DI - Days Inn ALexandra, VA (on the metro)
it's like $60/night

http://www.daysinn.com/DaysInn/control/Booking/property_info?propertyId=06419&brandInfo=DI - Another Days Inn in Alexandra which is also around $60/night

At this point, the only thing available downtown is either really really expensive or in a really bad part of the city (any of those hotels on New York Avenue)

Good luck!!

The Metro system is going to be your way of getting around the city so if you're in the burbs like Alexandra, you're about 15 minutes from whatever is happening downtown

2. You "could" walk to the Metro, but it's quite a ways.

So unless you have a car, bike, or are willing to look up bus schedules, getting to the Metro station will take a while.

I think, in addition to regular public busses, College Park itself has a Ride-on bus system. But I've no clue regarding it's routes/frequency, etc.

On the other hand, you are right next to (I think) College Perk, a nifty independant coffee house in the best bohemian "groozy" tradition. It's been a while since I was down there (back when the place was under construction) but it sounded like it's owners were setting it up to be a great place, with music and poetry nights. Basically its in an old farmhouse, so there's lots of different rooms, and a big outdoors deck and lots of tree'd areas if the weather is nice. (Which it should be this weekend.)

So, your address has some good and bad points.
