Edited on Thu Jan-18-07 09:16 AM by SharonRB
Since it worked so well, last time, let's plan on Hawk & Dove on Friday night before the march. Here's a link to their site: http://www.hawkanddoveonline.com

They are located at 329 Pennsylvania Ave. SE
Phone: 202-543-3300

I'll try to call them today to see if we can reserve their lower room again. I just wish I knew how many people to expect.

I'm trying to set up a book signing for Marcy Wheeler, author of "Anatomy of Deceit: How the Bush Administration Used the Media to Sell the Iraq War and Out a Spy." She also will be live blogging the Libby trial on Firedoglake.com beginning on Monday, January 22.

Marcy and her publisher have agreed to do a book signing at a DU meetup, but need to move quickly to get books, etc. in place.

We really would like to have at least an approximate idea of how many people will be there. Please post in this thread if you will attend Friday night.

1. Sorry I didn't get in touch last night - late night at work
My DC trip is all dependant on what my raise and/or bonus is, which I hope to find out today. I think the Hawk & Dove is perfect - they had some great beer specials that night with the $5 pitchers of beer

2. No problem.
I'm going to call them today, since no one else has taken it on. I need to let Marcy's publisher know, as well as Marcy, where we're going to be. I just hope people start posting so I have a clue about how many people will be there. I may ask the H&D to post something about the book signing on their website -- at least we'll get some people, even if they're not all DUers!

I'd like someone to find a spot for Saturday night, too.

3. Well RFD's is out
I mean, I liked the place but it was just too far away. I'd rather just keep it someplace near the Cap Hill Suites. However one thing you should try to avoid is the big dinner tab. I had an appetizer and one beer but ended up spending about $100 on the tab because people left, gave some money but not enough. I would say it would be better to meet later on, like 8pm and just let everyone do their own thing with dinner. There are several other bars in that area where people could meet.

You might want to mention for those not in the area they can take the metro to Capital South on the Blue/Orange line

It was way too out of the way.

And I hate when people leave without paying their fair share!

5. I just spoke to Paul at the Hawk & Dove
We're set for Friday night in the lower level Alley Bar. We have the room from 7-10, but can stay later. However, after 10, other people will be able to join us.

We did have to commit to spend at least $375, which is a drop in the bucket to what we spent last time. If I see we have only a handful of people, I may have to call and cancel the room, so please let us know soon if you're planning to attend.

We're just about set up for Marcy to do her book signing and talk with folks about her blogging at the Libby trial.

It got pretty crazy. People really need to keep track of how much they should leave so no one gets stuck at the end. We got lots of really cheap pitchers of beer last time.

20. Take good care of my evlbstrd
I don't know if you've ever noticed but my sig line is dedicated to that man. Despite his moniker, he is one of the sweetest men you will ever meet. We flirt shamelessly on-line on the Kansas forum. My husband reads them and just shakes his head and laughs. It's okay, they are good friends. In fact, sometimes my husband is talking to the evl one while evl and I are flirting on-line. Anyway, you all will fall in love with him too. He's got the political savvy of Keith Olbermann with the comedic timing of George Carlin and the renegade spirit of Mike Malloy. (*pssst, if you want to be his lifelong friend all you have to do is buy him a Guiness or two.*)

Hell, you'll fall in love with all the KC DU'ers. We live about 40 miles from KC but the KC Du'ers are so wonderful that we gladly drive all that way to see them. Of course, they also drive here to see us and hang out with our friends. They're great people. Proud2Blib can be a handful. But she'll always leave you laughing. She gave me a Jesus action figure she picked up in Memphis during her Elvis sojourn last month. She's been to Camp Casey several times and is just a rabble rouser who, along with kiteinthewind and evlbstrd, are the heart and soul of the liberals in the midwest.

I'm also jealous that they'll met you. I hope you all have a good time. :hi: :loveya:

And don't worry about keeping them up late. They can be night owls and they're operating on the Central Time Zone. Believe me, they can outlast the most hardened bunch. Take care and be safe while you are all there.
:grouphug:

It's near the Hawk & Dove and you can get a nice junior suite with enough room for 5 for like $119/night

82. Check the Marriott website
there are several Courtyards in/around DC that are close to the Metro & offer free parking. They serve a good breakfast in the morning as well (about $10). I can't remember the one I stayed at the last time, but it was literally ON the metro line in Virginia & about a 20 minute ride in to DC.

24. I hope I can make it.
I'm flying into Baltimore, arriving around 5pm. How long does it take the bus to get from the Baltimore airport to downtown DC? Then we'll need to find and check into our hotel...

But we had such a blast there last time, I really want to go again. If we make it into DC at a decent hour, you can count on me and my sweetie, DUer usedtobesick. :hi:

Here are some flashbacks to the Sept. '05 march:

105. The MetroBus?
takes an hour, roughly, to get to Greenbelt Metro Stop, then you have to take the Metro downtown.

If you are staying on the Hill, you might as well take the MARC train from BWI, it's seven bucks and takes you to Union Station right by the capitol. There is a free shuttle bus from arrivals to the train station. well worth the hassle unless you are staying on the Green line.

107. I'm not that familiar with the Metro colors.
We're staying on Pennsylvania Ave, about 4 blocks down from the White House towards the Capitol. Is that on the green line or by Union Station?

114. lemme guess, the Marriot?
you're fine if you want to brave the bus, take the green line to Archives, most likely. check with the hotel for the closest metro stop, if you care to (or we can tell you) but if it's cold and windy, you don't want to be out wandering the streets with a bunch of luggage looking like an easy mark tourist I figure!

25. Yes and I have a bunch of folks coming with me
There are 3 DUers coming from KC - evlbstrd, kiteinthewind and me. evl and kite are coming on a bus that will get to DC about 8 pm. They will come directly to the Hawk and Dove. Our friend David will probably be with them. Then my plane lands at 10 and I will take a cab directly to the Hawk and Dove. I will have one friend, Sharon, with me. Then we have two other friends, Katia and Nancy, flying in at noon. They will come to the Hawk and Dove at whatever time the soiree gets started.

So there will be 7 of us from KC coming to the Hawk and Dove.

Any word on a breakfast meetup?

104. "Beach Impeach" goes to DC!!!
DUers who are going to DC:

The man who put together the San Francisco Beach Impeach photo op is planning a similar event in DC!

Here's the info so far:

WASHINGTON, DC, NEXT WEEKEND -- United for Peace and Justice, an activist coalition of 1500 groups, is organizing a huge march on Washington next weekend, and yesterday I bought my airplane ticket. I am going to do my best to pull off, somewhere on the Mall, what we pulled off on the beach on January 6. Are you going to DC? Let me know, and I’ll try to keep you in the loop. I haven’t got this one organized yet – don’t have a permit, don’t have sand, haven’t figured it out, but I’m going for it... So if you’re there, and
you suddenly see a lot of people start to lie down on the grass, well, figure it out, and do what comes naturally…

If you DO want to keep up with my plans and actions and news, please take 15 seconds and register for the new email list I’ve started at www.bodiescount.org. Hit the “email list” bar at the top of the page and enter your email address. It’s that easy. It’s also that easy too unsubscribe. I promise I’ll TRY to not send more than one email a day. And I will not share your email address with anyone ever.

Also, you can follow at my blog: http://gonebyapril1.blogspot.com/

Brad
www.bodiescount.org

I would certainly contact him and let him know you are interested in participating -- he really needs to know how many bodies he has to work with.

I was in San Francisco (part of the "M") and I cannot encourage you enough to try to make this happen!

138. I'm coming from South Carolina...
..with four other people. I'd like to meet up but will need to check and see how others feel and what they are doing. I may just come myself if they are not interested.
