1. I live in Arlington, on the Orange Line
And I love the location. Encourage your kids to live in Virginia so they can vote there. There's also a great Young Dems group in Arlington, something that's lacking in DC.

2. I just moved here myself
I moved here from Denver on October 6th. I came in June to scope out apartments. I decided to live in Silver Spring which is literally a stones throw from the DC border. There are lots of apartments and shopping right around the Silver Spring Metro Station.

Get them a copy of the NFT (Not For Tourists) guidebook. Also the yellow Station Masters metro map book is the best because it shows a 1 mile square around each metro station, so you can tell what's in the area when you come up out of any metro station.

Dupont Circle is a hot spot for night life and restaurants, so your chef could do a Google search for restaurants around the Dupont circle station and start there. Silver Spring has a lot of little family-owned ethnic restaurants.

Apartments have waiting lists, so have them get on waiting lists. Ask questions ahead of time because apartment leases may have restrictions on certain things that you wouldn't see in other areas of the country (firearms, birds, waterbeds) and they won't send you a copy of the lease until you're ready to sign it.

I just went through all of this, so let me know if there's anything else I can do. -JLC

3. Moving to DC is exciting!
First off, congratulations! Moving to D.C. is a wonderful excitement for a lot of people. I moved out here about 4 months ago, i had trouble finding a moving company but later i found http://www.movers-moving-companies.com/Washington_DC/moving_company_Washington_DC.htm">Washington D.C. Movers Basically they helped with the whole transition of moving our semi-valuable belongings into the new city. Anyways, the Georgetown district has plenty of restaurants and areas for your son to check out. Hope i helped a bit! Good luck!
