Help! Staying in Capitol Heights for counter-inaugural...
Edited on Mon Jan-17-05 04:38 PM by dray178355
any pointers on getting into town without taking the car and trying to park? Can't seem to get a metro map. We're only about ten miles from The Mall, etc. but it would be nice not to have to take the vehicle.

Also looking for good, reasonably price, Democratic bars & restaurants . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

1. Taking the Metro Should Not be Hard

Here's a map of the local metro station in Capitol Heights. You can zoom or get directions from a specific address.

Here's the link to the page on that specific station. Looks like you can park there for $3.50, or possibly for free. Fares are only collected through 2PM.

There are plenty of moderate restaurants and bars in DC and MD. A lot of the best are ethnic restaurants in malls (in the suburbs) or in ethnic neighborhoods (DC). If it's warm enough to walk a mile or so, you might want to check out the Adams Morgan wection (18th and Columbia NW). Dupont's the nearest station, but it's not real close.

2. There is a Capitol Height Metro Station.
Here's a link to the map:

http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm

If you click on "trip planner," it will also tell you how to get from point A to point B, and includes links to the bus system as well.

I can tell you that a lot of the Dem staffers on the Hill go to the Hawk N Dove and the Capitol Lounge (both are bar/restaurant combos with reasonable prices), but that is not to say that there are not Repubs there as well. Both are on Pennsylvania Avenue, a couple of blocks from the Capitol South Station (on the Blue line, same as Capitol Heights).

There are also lots of sites to look up bars and restaurants, but I think the Post's is the most helpful:

I hope this helps. Where are you coming from?

Good luck!

3. I love this place!
Thank you both so much. I was able to find a Metro brochure online finally, and a link to the Capitol Heights info. The best web site I've found for all of the info needed for the protest is the counterinaugural.com site. Links to everything. Just took me a while to find it, I guess.

We're coming in from South Bend, IN. There are five of us traveling together. Three old but cute ladies, one college student and one recent college graduate. We're staying through Friday but maybe until Saturday if I can talk them into doing a little sight-seeing. It's my first time in DC.
