For those flying into DC for protest: Where are you coming from
WOW, I'm absolutely flabbergasted with the number of people coming in for this protest. If we are generating this much excitement imagine just how many people overall will be showing up for this protest.

I'm starting this thread because of the overwhelming number of people flying into DC for the protest and also because there are many people who might be doing this trip solo. I thought if we had a thread where we post where we're traveling from or what airport we'll be coming into then maybe others who are looking for traveling companions might find other folks to connect with. I, unfortunately am just one person and I'm fearful I might not get to meet everyone coming to DC. But I want to know that every DUer coming to DC will be able to meet other DUers and ESPECIALLY if you are soloing this trip that you might be able to find other DU friends you can travel & hang out with!

So in the subject line just post what City/STate you're traveling from and if you are flying in - which airport. Then if you are someone looking for others traveling you can check this thread and find others like you coming into DC and hopefully connect up with them. Don't post your hotel only because some folks might want to keep that private - you can discuss that through PMs.

FYI - I'm coming in from Wilmington DE by minivan. Small group of us carpooling to DC :D

4. protest??
If I can get a bus trip from connecticut, like jan 2003, I'll be there.

Aren't any of you worried about Miami WTO violent oppression by the authorities?

Rubber bullets can take out an eye and maim permanently!

Tasers can be pretty fatal, also.

5. If you're like me - you avoid trouble when you see it
DC protests have been very calm these past years and the police have done an excellent job letting us have our day and not getting radical on us. But this year the protest coincides with the IMF World gathering and that makes me a little bit nervous.

But my mentality to the group is this - we're a bunch of folks with regular jobs & regular lives who want to be a part of the protest but really don't want to end up in jail, the hospital or a morgue. If anyone in the group wants to get radical I suggest moving on and finding those like you and the rest of us hang behind and try our best to avoid trouble.

NYC seems to have a problem with protest but DC does a great job hosting them. This is probably my 9-10th protest I've attended and fourth time I've organized something for DU. I've had good success.

BTW - check International Answer and United for Peace websites for organized groups from your state!

8. The vast majority of us don't want violence
We can be prepared by reading the web sites and knowing which groups are coming at it from a peaceful standpoint.

Groups are planning individual agendas and will be hanging fairly tightly together. It's for our own safety to stay with groups we know and trust.

13. Isn't there a history of planting covert disruptors
in large protests and rallies to make the event look more radical?

I know environmental and animal rights activists have problems with that.

I'm not worried at all hanging with the DUers :patriot:

10. unlikely, except for isolated incidents
DC is proud of the way we handle protests and marches, places like Miami might get one every ten years, we get them every three weeks in the marching season. I heartily reccomend reading the parking signs, they've been known to lose cars when they tow them for a few days, and listen to cops, most of them know very well what they're doing.

oh, bikes are not good either, technically, if you are riding a bike without a DC license for said bike (yes, they have them) the cops can confiscate your bike. They have been known to do this to protesters.

you can count me out for the protests, I'm bored with them, but I'll make the happy hours.

12. You're absolutely correct
Edited on Tue Aug-09-05 01:11 PM by LynneSin
DC police will not interact unless they are goaded into it. I mean, they have to protect themselves & their own so if someone goes after them. Those who do should expect rubber bullets, taser and other attacks back. They also make it a point to surround the opposing counter-protest since there always seems to be a yelling match going on between the two groups.

But the biggest acknowledgement has to go to the City of DC which provides the space & permits needed to carry off a protest like this. I still remember that protest in NYC right before the war started. Bloomberg refused to give a permit for the march and ended up shutting down most of downtown Manhatten since there was no room for the protests where the rally was being held (that area holds about 50k people and 500k people showed up) and basically there were protestors shoved into 50 blocks of prime NYC real estate. The police were extremely agressive that day even towards people who I witnessed did NOT provoke them. THey would tell us to walk on sidewalks in one city block and the next they would move us off into the street and they would threaten us if we didn't obey. At one point at Lexington & 51st street the Mounted Police came charging into the block and knocking people over (BTW the protest gathering was 10 blocks south and 4 blocks east - and we couldn't get there because of the jam.

So hats off to DC for recognizing that protesters will be coming and doing their best to ensure that everyone has a safe time.

19. What airport are you flying out of?
I know that Boise is SW Idaho and they have flights to DC for less than $225, but I also know Idaho is a big state and Boise might not be the closest airport.

Try this great website which actually searches all the airline/travel websites to find your best flight

http://www.kayak.com

When coming into DC make sure you try and get either BWI or DCA. Those airports are on the Metro where IAD (Dulles) is not!

Boise is 3 hours away and SLC is only a little over 2. Plus, flying out of SLC will be cheaper and a shorter flight!

23. Actually, I found cheaper doing Boise than SLC
Ok, I have to confess all this DC stuff has played into one of my favorite quirky hobbies and that's travel. If I could afford to be a full time travel agent I would because I enjoy it so much.

You could do United Boise to BWI for $210 (+tax) or SLC to BWI through Frontier for $289. SLC flight is about 20 minutes shorter

Greatest travel site ever!!

25. Someday!
Maybe there will be a few thousand going down the streets and hy ways
on those small motorized scooters, powered by electricity from the many government (preferably federal) plug-ins in millions of parks and buildings! Those are going to say a lot soon and it won't be just the neighborhood kids! Also, all should offer anyone in powered wheel chairs, a recharge at their home or businesses!
