The National Weather Service issued flash flood and severe thunderstorm warnings as the storms moved into the area from the west and northwest. They were expected to be especially serious in McHenry, Lake and the northern part of Cook Counties, said meteorologist Nathan Marsili.
Up to six inches of rain fell this morning in Rockford, one of the areas hardest hit, with reports of about three inches falling in a hour, he said.
Flooding a threat
"We're expecting a lot of heavy rain, especially in the north suburbs back into the Rockford area. ... We're going to have some high wind gusts and a lot of lightning," Marsili said.
