if your kids are working, check their paychecks and make sure they are getting paid what they should be paid.

if they are newly employed, the employer can pay 50 cents below minimum for the first 90 days.

if they are under 18 years old the employer can pay 50 cents below minimum wage.

if your kids are working at a local pool that is only open for the summer but they have worked there last year that is considered over 90 days and they should be paid at least minimum wage. the 90 day newly employed period does not count just because the pool is open only in summer.

i mention this because my daughter is working at a private pool and has been paid 50 cents below minimum wage--so i wanted to find out why (turns out because she is new)

however, we also discovered that they are paying kids who are 18 and have been there for a couple years 50 cents under minimum.

if a complaint form is filed with the illinois department of labor it can take over one year for them to follow through and the company will not be made to pay retroactively unfortunately. (you can go to small claims court or get a lawyer for that)

talk to your kids. check their paycheck. there are posters that are also required for employees to post and one clearly states the new minimum wage. if they are not displaying these posters or paying you or your child properly they are breaking the law. http://www.state.il.us/agency/idol/forms/PDFS/EnglishOnly.pdf

1. What's wrong is the ability of employers to pay less

than mandated for temporary periods. I guess that concession is what it took to get the bill passed.
