with john kass. but on this one.....

State Democrats show true colors in picking lieutenant governor candidate

And if Republicans dared to whisper in this fashion — even whispering it privately — the media would be feasting on roasted GOP ambitions.

It's the Democratic Party that has long used race and ethnicity to divide up the public spoils, from public employment to public contracts.

But party officials have little to say on the Turner issue. In his case, it's all very quiet. Hush.

"I get a sense that there's some sort of sentiment for quotas, but my attitude is that quotas is not the issue," Turner said. "We need to talk about who is the best-qualified, more than the race issue.

1. I had a problem with the Olympics analogy
Edited on Fri Feb-12-10 10:26 AM by barb162
as if we are dealing with bobsled times and the team that got gold was found to have been on illegal drugs so the gold goes automatically to the second best timing team. I think the Party has to look at who would most likely win over the 27 year old silver- spoon- in- the- mouth Republican nominee from outside the Chicago area, who can run really well with Quinn, etc. If that person is Turner, fine. Duckworth, fine. Boland, fine. Hoffman, fine. My own sense of it all is that after all the sleaze came out on Cohen, I'd want Hoffman (the incorruptible outsider ) as the candidate. I see race as a totally phony and non- issue after this State elected Obama to the Presidency.

3. Look at the IL numbers, the numbers tell the story

2008 OFFICIAL PRESIDENTIAL GENERAL ELECTION RESULTS

Obama 3,419,673
McCain 2,031,527
Nader 30,952
McKinney 11,838
http://www.fec.gov/pubrec/fe2008/2008presgeresults.pdf

With Obama winning by a H.U.G.E. margin in Il, I don't see race as a big issue (if it were, the white guys would have won).

4. Keyes wasn't even a resident of this State
Edited on Fri Feb-12-10 01:08 PM by barb162
He was a carpetbagger whereas all of the other candidates like Duckworth, Hoffman, Boland, Turner have actually lived, worked, run for office, etc. in this state. Keyes was an automatic loser simply by his carpetbagger status, let alone his politics.

PS Don't you remember when people were laughing out loud when the far right wing of the GOP brought Keyes in as their "viable" (bwa) candidate for Senator? Most of the Republicans wouldn't even talk to him let alone campaign for him.

5. automatic loser-
and his race.

sorry, but voting for one very light skinned black guy, who spake very carefully about race, does not mean that race as an issue is dead in illinois or anywhere else. i doubt we would be seeing the teabaggers if it was.

8. It surprises me that the person who won the most votes
after Cohen isn't automatically the candidate. He was duly elected - I don't care if his skin is purple - the people voted for him so he gets to run. This is ridiculous if true. Dammit. I wish we could get beyond this stupid stupid race thing.
