Chicago DUers: kindly bombard the Trib w/ LTTEs regarding Bush endorsement
Already mentioned by xray s in another thread. Here's AP link:
http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/N/NEWSPAPER_ENDORSEMENTS?SITE=SCCOL&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT
and their excerpt:
"There is much the current president could have done differently over the last four years. ... But for his resoluteness on the defining challenge of our age - a resoluteness John Kerry has not been able to demonstrate - the Chicago Tribune urges the re-election of George W. Bush as president of the United States."
Kneejerk reaction would be, "Huh?"

1. Wow...that's a big surprise (sarcasm in full gear)
"Could have done differently"???? The man is a fucking DISASTER for this country the past 4 years...and the Trib makes it sound like he made some silly little mistakes.

I'll send my LTTE tomorrow. :-)

Heard that last Sunday when they were interviewing someone from the Trib about it.

Infuriating, isn't it?

3. cancel your subscriptions
Edited on Sat Oct-16-04 11:32 PM by xray s
The Tribune only understands money. They would never endorse Kerry because they know tens of thousands of their Republican subscribers would cancel their subscriptions.

The Chicago area is strongly Democratic. They take us for granted. They throw us bones on the op-ed page, but they endorse the worst president this country has EVER had.

It is time to organize a mass cancellation of Tribune subscriptions to protest the death and destruction that the man they endorsed for president has wrought upon the world.

9. oak park

That area is pretty liberal.

If it has an 'L' going to it, it's liberal.

Hell, Cook County is not where the Bush supporters live - they're further north and west.

11. signs in Oak Park
The few "Bush" signs that I do see in Oak Park are really large obnoxious ones. Am I supposed to think "Wow! Thats a really large sign. I'll vote for HIM."?

7. The Blood Of Jamie Moreno Is On The Hands Of The Bloody Tribune
These assholes will not get one more dime of my money. I am taking the cost of my subscription and donating it to the Kerry campaign

Suburban GI killed in Iraq

The Associated Press
Published October 16, 2004, 3:25 PM CDT

Jaime Moreno had dreamt about becoming a soldier ever since he was 5 years old.

The 28-year-old north suburban native died in Iraq pursuing that dream when the convoy he was traveling in hit a roadside bomb in eastern Baghdad Wednesday, his family said. He is survived by his wife, 8-year-old daughter and parents and a brother and two sisters.

"His dreams came true," Moreno's sister Maricela Repizo said. "That was his dream, to be a soldier."

The Round Lake Beach native had been in the Army in Iraq since March, and his death dealt a blow to his close-knit family, many of whom said they do not agree with the war.

"He died for this country, for a war that shouldn't be going on in the first place," Moreno's brother, Jorge, said. "We support the troops but not the war."

8. I know this will sound cynical, but I think you've found the peg for your
letter to the editor. And may Jaime rest in peace.

10. Subscription cancelled
In past elections I've taken their predictable Repub endorsements in stride, usually just chuckling about it. This year is different. This election is far too important. I simply can not give my money to a company that publicly endorses the Bush presidency. Money talks, people! I have been a subsciber for many many years and I have cancelled today. I urge you to do the same and let them know why. They should not be rewarded for this choice.

12. I just cancelled my subscription
I called the Tribune's customer service line (1-800-TRIBUNE or 1-800-874-2863) and told them I am cancelling my subscription, which I have had for many years. The woman asked if it was a vacation cancellation or permanent and I said it is VERY permanent and it is because of their endorsement of Bush for president. I told her I never want their paper in my house again. I asked if she read the editorial yet and she said she hadn't. I told her I was especially disgusted because it essentially says yes, Bush has done a bad job with one thing after another and yes, John Kerry is a good man with a good record, but 9/11 - FEAR - 9/11 - TERROR - 9/11 - BE AFRAID, BE VERY AFRAID!

She asked if I would like to speak with her supervisor and I did. I told her the same thing and that they should read their own damn paper. On the opposite page is a column by Geoffrey R. Stone called "America's New McCarthyism" that starts out: "In the 'war on terrorism' we once again see the manipulation of fear and the corruption of public discourse in pursuit of partisan gain." She asked if rather than cancel my subscription, I might want the contact information for the editorial staff. I told her they will be hearing from me too, but that I will never have the Chicago Tribune in my house again!

I am so mad I am shaking so hard I can hardly type.

13. I just wrote telling them I was extrememly disappointed and that
his "resolute" thinking will just result in millions more unemployed, without health care and losing their homes, more unneccessary wars and that we need sanity in our domestic and foreign policy. I just cannot believe those dicks at the Trib endorsed the jerk.

15. I believe it

Why is anyone surprised? The Tribune has always been right-wing. Robert McCormick was a Nazi sympathizer.

16. I thought they might get SOME brains because Bush is so
incredibly bad. They basically trashed him and then they endorse him because he is resolute in his stupidity on all issues. Duh? There have been many hints the last several years that the Trib became more liberal. This endorsement of Bush makes me wonder if they will endorse Keyes over Obama. You know, do five paragraphs on what a jerk Keyes is, then endorse Keyes.

18. liberal columnists

Conservative papers HAVE to include some liberal columnists if they want to be regarded as a serious, legitimate newspaper.

It is a business decision for the Tribune, nothing more. Without the inclusion of those writers, the Tribune would have the same status as the Mooney Times.

Also, their pretense is that they are somehow of a higher 'quality' than their tabloid rival, the Sun-Times.

They won't endorse Keyes, however, because he's tooooo loony. It's all about the $$$$ with these people.

To be honest, I've always felt the Trib gave me a lot of info, despite their right-wing bent. Now I have ZERO use for that paper.

(scroll down)

I happen to think that newspapers shouldn't endorse candidates in major races -- that the practice is a throwback to a different era and somewhat mysterious, to boot:

Who at the Tribune or other like-minded papers endorses Bush?

Or who, for that matter, at, say, the New York Times endorses Sen. John Kerry?

The publishers? The owners? Not the staff, certainly -- no paper I know polls the staff. But is it the top editors? The members of the editorial board? What fraction of the editorial board?

The papers never say. The conceit is that the institution, Oz like, speaks.
