Anybody a Chicago theatre fan?

I like Chicago theatre alot. I got to more movies than plays but I go to more plays than most people do. I'm a fan of TimeLine Theatre and House Theatre Company. They are really consistent about putting on good shows. I like to support the University theatre departments, but their plays are really hit or miss. The big three: Steppenwolf, Goodman, and Chicago Shakespeare cost so much, it's hard to find a good price. Even when you do get a good price, I've found that the quality doesn't always match the hype. One of the best shows I've seen in Chicago though was at Steppenwolf. Did anyone else see "Time of Your Life"?

1. If You Like Chicago Theatre Then You Should Check Out "Theatre Entropy" ..

Last summer they broke into the Chicago theatre scene with a great and timely production of Orwell's 1984. This year they are presenting "Making Peter Pope" Feb 11th to Mar 5th at the Live Bait Theater. The production that I'm really looking forward to will be presented sometime in 2005 (no hard date yet) is "Recent Tragic Events". The story line dovetails with Sept 11, 2001. It really sounds interesting. You should check this group out.

5. 73, here's a good website to locate any Chicago theatre company

You may or may not be aware of this, but there is an organization called the League of Chicago Theatres. I imagine that if you are familiar with Live Bait, you know that at least. The league has a new website that is www.chicagplays.com It's really helpful for any type of question you may have any Chicago theatre.

Okay, but as I write this post, I just found out that Live Bait Theatre is not a member of the League or they just don't' have a website. Live Bait isn't listed on their link page and the closest thing I could find for Live Bait is here: http://centerstage.net/theatre/theatres/live-bait.html

Live Bait is located at 3914 N. Clark St.

3. Yes, over here!! Big theater fan!

In our "heyday" we would attend 2 or 3 plays a weekend - all "off Broadway" storefront type productions. Still love to go - Hot Tix is great.
Have you been to the somewhat renovated Atheneum?
We can walk there. Saw "Glass Menagerie" last weekend.
Maybe we should put a fun DU theater-going group together?

4. I was meaning to go see the Glass Menagerie...

Is the production any good? The Atheneum is right down the street from me and I read the play once, very good script. A DU theater going group would be kind of fun. Even if we all just went to the same play over a month's time and came back to the Illinois Forum to talk about it. Have you seen or do you have any interest in seeing "The Curse of the Crying Heart" produced by the House Theatre of Chicago? I really love the House's stuff.

Oh and I have been to the Antheneum since it was renovated. It's somewhat of a different building. It really makes the place look better and gives it a modern feel. I was House Managing a show for DePaul during the building stage and you had to wear your coat when you were in the lobby. It was something how they did all that work.

6. "Glass" was very good but they played music throughout which was

rather strange. Also, the theater was very small - sort of ruined it for me as the ambiance of the theater is important. I hate to feel like a sardine crammed into a tiny can!

"The Curse" sounds interesting - will have to check it out.
We are going to see Hamlet this weekend at Josephinium - its supposed to be a very good version of same - will let you know.

I've never been to any "House" theater productions -where are they located?

7. I Saw the "Van Gogh" play at Bailiwick last night - excellent!

I wasn't expecting much from the so-so reviews but it was great. The set and lighting was fantastic and the acting just superb. I was so surprised as I said I was not looking forward to going at all - what a great way to spend a night in such miserable weather.

The actors who played Van Gogh and Gauguin plus the narrator/actor were wonderful.

I could go see it again tonight.

9. Verbatim Verboten

is interesting for anyone who likes theatre and politics. It's at the Royal George. I didn't know, before seeing the show, that when Georgie was asked at the Republican National Convention in 1996, I think it was, what he and his father discussed when they weren't talking politics, he said, "*ussy," !!!!!!!! The production was not to my standards of professionalism, mostly because of an unprofessional narrator, but the actors did a good job, generally, and I loved the concept -- the show changes regularly as they have 150 vignettes of famous folks being caught "off the record." But don't pay full price -- because it isn't worth the full price -- go hot tix.

10. Yeah, the Royal George can be pretty steep

Then again, I'm a college student. Everyting above $20 seems expensive to me.
