SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Rod Blagojevich made a surprising announcement in his State of the State address on Thursday – East Central Illinois is finally going to get to see its Opportunity Returns economic development plan.
The idea behind Opportunity Returns is that each of 10 geographic regions of the state will receive its own targeted economic development plan with a different combination of grants, construction projects and other initiatives designed to fit the needs of that area and make it more attractive to business.
Opportunity Returns spokesman Andrew Ross confirmed that the governor would "unveil his strategy for the East Central region next week" but could not confirm a specific date or whether the governor himself would be coming to town.
The East Central region includes Champaign, Vermilion, Ford, Douglas, Iroquois and Piatt counties.
