"It's easy to be cynical about The Daley Pledge, the mayor's promise earlier this week not to accept political contributions from companies that do business with the city, their owners or spouses of their owners.

The Daley Pledge is a wrought-iron fence purporting to dam a mighty river. Money always finds its target in politics; limits, bans and decrees do little more than obscure the sources of funds and the motives of the givers.

But I choose not to be cynical.

I choose instead to focus on the symbolism rather than the substance, and to see Mayor Richard M. Daley's emotional "state of the city" speech as a turning point, not only in city government, but also county and state government."

How ironic. I was thinking of using the eye-rolling 'smiley' face in my first post about the Daley pledge. It seems like Blago may take some BIG political heat if he doesn't take on the 'Daley Pledge'.
