http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-050221cta,1,5466875.story?coll=chi-newslocal-hed&ctrack=1&cset=true"Underground work gone awry forced the partial closing today of the CTA Blue Line subway on Chicago's Near Northwest Side, officials reported.
A contractor not working for the transit authority was doing soil borings shortly before 1 p.m. at Division Street and Milwaukee Avenue when a 5-inch hole opened, allowing sand and water to pour onto the northbound subway tracks, CTA officials said.
Northbound trains were halted while CTA crews cleaned up the mess.
Southbound trains were moving, and extra buses were put on the Milwaukee No. 56 route above the Blue Line tracks to carry passengers north between the Grand and Damen Avenue stations.
Northbound trains resumed running about 2 p.m., officials said. But they will move past the scene at reduced speed, about 6 m.p.h., while the clean-up continues."
