No miracle on State Street: Marshall Field's to change to Macy's
Daley says return of Frango production to Chicago possible

Tribune staff reports
Published September 20, 2005, 3:15 PM CDT

Marshall Field & Co., a name long venerated in the history of Chicago retailing, will disappear in the fall of 2006, to be replaced by Macy's.

All 62 Field's in Illinois and seven other states will be converted to Macy's, according to today's announcement by Federated Department Stores Inc., Field's new owner.

"The business has to grow, and that just hasn't been happening," Terry J. Lundgren, Federated's chairman, president and chief executive, said as he explained the decision to turn Field's into Macy's.

"Clearly this is an emotional day, and it's an emotional decision, and for people who live in Chicago, we have total and complete respect for this brand name of Marshall Field. But you have to grow the business today," Lundgren told CLTV after meeting today with the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board.

1. St Louis is losing Famous Barr...they will become
Macy's as well. Famous has a sale every week...I wonder if Macy's does that...Famous also has a long history in St Louis. I am sure their stores will become more corporate with more cookie cutter people as employees.

4. I agree.
Frankly, I shop less at Field's than I once did. But it is a Chicago institution....the Cubs had damned well better not move.

10. Macy's has quite a few sales. I shop there all the time...
I can buy something one week for 25% and go back a week later and the same item will be 50% or 60% off. You you can get some good merchandise for cheapo prices. If you keep your receipts you can get an adjustment without even bringing the item out. They also frequently have coupons in the newspaper for 10% to 30% off.

What are the Macy's guys smoking?

ONE QUESTION: What are the Macy's guys smoking?

By taking a fabled Chicago shopping legend -- Marshall Field's -- and renaming it for a New York department store, they have guaranteed themselves a place in the Hall of Fame of Idiotic Marketing Blunders. It's Dumb Day in retailing and the decision to change Field's name to Macy's will go down with "New" Coke and replacing Jane Pauley on the Today Show as textbook examples of violating the first principal of staying on top.

That is: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

MEET YOU UNDER THE MACY'S CLOCK? I don't think so.

5. You'd think they could manage to honor the man who started
the whole idea of department stores by keeping his name on the one store.

I know there are so many more important things going on in the world, but this cheeses me off.

Typical Corporate poophead decision. Blecchh.

They're homogenizing us. They're wrong. It's a huge mistake.

7. Huge mistake
I worked at Field's State St store for years - in the finance offices. There will be a boycott of all boycotts. Fields is a institution, a huge part of Chicago history. What's next changing the Field Museum to Macy Museum?

11. I just found out yesterday that Macy's is also buying
Filene's. Filene's in New England is THE premier department store. I like is so much better than Macy's. In the malls where there is both a Macy and Filene store, the Filene store will close. Bummer!!!

12. We have Filene's Basements in Chicago as well....
No idea if they are changing that name. Seems like they want to obliterate the name of a Chicago icon.

13. Could be a publicity stunt.
A company that size could complete a name change, complete with signage, in a lot less time than a year. Doing it this way just invites a lot of squawking and complaining...

14. So then when they finally keep the Field's name,
Edited on Wed Sep-21-05 09:38 PM by Kurovski
they can look like the good guys? Hmmm.

They've gotten a lot of publicity, too. And bringing the Frango operation back is a good move no matter what they call the store.

(I haven't touched a Frango since the day they dumped all those Chicagoan's jobs.)

Edit: I just realized: "Gidney and Cloyd" You're a Bullwinkle fan, aint'cha? I hear they're on DVD now.
