Twenty-one Gulf refineries gird for Rita's wrath

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Twenty-one oil refineries whose combined output constitutes 27.5% of U.S. refining capacity sit in the potential path of Hurricane Rita, the American Petroleum Institute said Thursday....

Two key pipelines move petroleum products from Texas refineries up to the Midwest region - the Explorer pipeline and the Texas Eastern Products pipeline.

The 1,400-mile Explorer pipeline was shut down on Wednesday, halting the flow of fuel moving from the Gulf coast north to Tulsa, Oklahoma. The pipeline supplies gasoline, diesel fuel and jet fuel to customers in St. Louis, Missouri and Chicago, Illinois and could create a supply crunch, according to the institute.
