DST in Indiana?

Any thoughts on whether we should switch to DST? I'm in favor of it so long as we go to Eastern time; I don't see the benefits in going to Central time.

I don't see it's value. Really - I've lived lots of places and I've never liked DST. In Portland, Oregon - it stays daylight in the summer until almost 10 p.m. - yet in the winter it is dark way before 5 p.m. It seems fuc#ed up IMO.

I grew up in Indiana, and now live in Georgia. I have been subjected to DST for almost 20 years now, and I'm still NOT used to it.

I think is was some sort of Communist Plot (DST).:silly:

Parts of Indiana are on DST, and parts are not. That's totally stupid. Either the entire state should be on, or not.

And if we're going to go with DST, I hope we choose the Central Time Zone because I despise having to watch decent network shows at 10 pm on weeknights knowing my alarm clock is going off at 6 AM and I'll still be toast.

And my family is all still in Wisconsin and Minnesota, so being on the same time zone would help with phone calls, flight schedules, etc.

But that's just me.

Networks should be able to broadcast shows to all time zones at the same time except for live broadcasts.

The 7PM show in EST would be shown at 7PM in CST, MST and PST. There is no reason that a show has to be shown at 8PM in EST and 7PM in CST.

Indiana used to be in the Central Time Zone. We went to "fast" time in the spring of '66 and never switched back in the fall when we joined the eastern time zone. At least that's what I remember. You couldn't go to the drive-in until 10pm because it was just too light to see the movie!

...but, Indiana is on "Eastern Standard Time" (EST) all year round.

Most of Michigan and Ohio are "Eastern Daylight Time" in the summer, and Illinois is on (CDT) "Central Daylight Time" in the summer.

7. DST Horror/funny story

I grew up and lived in Elkhart, IN, which is only about 3 miles from the Michigan boarder. Well, in High School, I went to the EACC (Elkhart Area Career Center) in the morning half of my day. The EACC also had a deal with other near by School systems, some in Michigan, who DO use DST.

This was not a problem for the Michigan students for half of the year, but the other half of the year, when our class ended at 10:50am (which would be 11:50am in Constantine, Michigan), I had 1 hour and 10 minutes to eat lunch and get to my next class at 12:00 noon, at my school, which was about 10 minutes away.

But for the Michigan students, who's school was at least 30 minutes away, in Michigan, they where guaranteed to be at least 20 Minutes late, even if they skipped lunch. :evilgrin:

I grew up in Central time. Took me a while to understand the old Johnny Carson line "Film at 11". Now that I've experienced 11:00 news
(not often because I work early in the A.M.) I don't like it. I can tape The Daily Show but why tape 11:00 news?

10. Frankly... I don't care, and never have.

I have lived with DST in several states and returned to no switching of clocks. Have lived with having to adjust twice a year to remember which time we are on when talking with folks in other time zones. We adjust.

Personally, I rather like letting the time, in terms of when it gets dark vs light, grow naturally... I rather like not changing time. However I always adjusted when living with it. At the same time I have never found it that difficult in professional situations, working with folks around the country, to adjust to thinking about "which time is it now, there" just after the time change in other areas. It isn't really a big deal. The only problem I have ever had (and probably a part of why I ever so slightly favor keeping things as they are as opposed to changing them) was when I commuted against the rising and setting sun. Suddenly I had to deal with a couple of weeks where the sun was just in the "eye" of the commute making the drive much more unpleasant - four times a year rather than twice a year. But that's just me.

I used to sell computer parts wholesale to companies across the country and it was a major hassle to have most of my customers change their clocks twice a year when we didn't. Invariably some customer would be pissed because they missed a shipping cutoff time or because we weren't in the office when they expected us to be.

Now all I really want is more daylight time in the evenings and a cable schedule that doesn't change twice a year but I can see why this is a big issue to people who do business across state lines.

The only thing harder than getting up an hour earlier than I do now, would be trying to get to sleep with the sun still up in June and July... And it will be. In the summer it doesn't go dark until between 9:15 and 9:30... add an hour to that and you'll see how silly it is for Indiana to be in the eatern time zone... Technically we've followed Central Daylight Time these last 30+ years. It's time to fall back!!! If you'll notice, noon now comes at almost 1 p.m. If you're in Indy, that's the time when the shadow of Monument Circle points north. If we switch to EDT, it will be about 2 p.m. when this happens.

Not having DST for me is the prime motivation for staying in Indiana and not going back east. What ever Indiana is or is not for me, the saving grace these past few years have been I don't have to change my clocks! Subsequently I do not have to foul up my sleep patterings because a silly time change.

whatever one they chose. Having offices in Indianapolis, New Albany, and Evansville means we're all never on the same time zone, which sucks. Took our IT guy some time to set up MS Outlook for this problem, as we were unable to use the meeting scheduling feature which was usually incorrect when we tried to book meetings between the three locations.

I visited my cousing about five years ago during 4th of July week. He lives in Sublette, which is west of Dodge City. Yes, very flat. We had to wait until past 10:00 before it was dark enough for fireworks. They are on CDT.

DST does work and you can "save" daylight. By moving the clocks ahead one hour in the summer, more of the average person's waking hours are during the height of daylight. This lowers energy usage (less need for lights, etc) and saves the people and the government money. Before dismissing it as "stupid" read up on it.

I don't have a problem with it. And working for a company who's headquarters is in New Jersey, I have to deal with the confusion our time creates twice a year. Causes missed meeting, flubbed sales calls, etc. all because people outside of Indiana always forget we don't switch so there's always a few weeks of transition that costs the company money in terms of man hours lost.

I'm not going to debate whether DST works or not (even though the above links cite many reasons why it does). That's not my point. My point is that we should be on something that matches the rest of the country because it's good for business (and not EVERYTHING that is good for business is evil).

Perhaps, if everyone was on the same schedule and that schedule was based on a 9-5 workday Monday through Friday, that MIGHT be true. But the fact is that people's schedules are all over the map in this 24/7 world and plenty of lights are on all night long to accomodate that.

I lived in CT for a few years, so I do have first hand experience with DST. My parents live in FL now, which also observes it. Funny how my electric bills never wavered, and theirs don't either.

I visited both of the links you provided, and noticed that they contain assertions that match yours, but no real evidence. Studies done in the 1970s? That was 3 decades ago. As I stated above, this is now a 24/7 world. Where are modern studies reaffirming these findings?

Finally, I want to address the much touted "better for business" meme. I haven't seen a shred of evidence anywhere, from anyone, proving that. I'm a Hoosier family business owner and I can't think of a single time in the past 25 years the time change has affected our family's business. Not one. And yes, we do deal with companies all over the nation.

It is possible to reasonably, and intelligently disagree about DST. I firmly believe it is stupid, but I'm hardly "uneducated" about it. Quite the contrary, I determined it was stupid AFTER looking into it more instead of simply repeating claims made by people with an agenda.

Every time I hear one of these "it's bad for business" stories, I ponder.....Why do a LOT of these people make 2, 3X or more income than I do, when they're incapable of figuring out time zones. Do they try to call vendors in italy at 1 in the morning their time, and tell their boss "Heh...Guess they were out to lunch or something..."

there are no valid reasons (your trade association-sponsored links notwithstanding) for Daylight "Saving" Time anymore.

We have no shipyards making vital Liberty Ships for the war effort anymore. Farmers have enough candlepower on top of their equipment the sun could go dark and they'd keep on plowing.

There is no rational reason for it anymore. In fact, the very term "Daylight Savings Time" isn't even the original name. We were on Eastern Standard War Time. Perhaps now that we're in the Age of Perpetual War, that'd be appropriate again.

DST make about as much sense as a national day where everyone is required to wear women's panties on their heads.

...as long as we are on the same time with Michigan and Ohio (which I understand we will be).

Living near both the Michigan and Ohio borders, I grow weary of having to ask people across the border what time they are on when making appointments or when going to see a movie (the theater in Michigan, just fifteen minutes away, is the best theater within a fifty-mile radius).
