Governor: Schools' attitude is not a help
Governor: Schools' attitude is not a help
Educators need to trim costs like everyone else instead of asking for more money, Daniels declares.

By Michele McNeil

April 8, 2005

A day after public school advocates chanted, "No more Mitch," the governor told them they need to get used to no more money.

Instead, public schools need to reduce overhead and direct more money into the classroom, Gov. Mitch Daniels said Thursday.

"I think it's really sad that folks come and demand more, more, more of the same, same, same," he said.

His rebuke came a day after about 1,500 people packed the Statehouse, some chanting, "No more Mitch," to protest what they describe as inadequate school-funding proposals that they fear will lead to widespread teacher layoffs, bigger class sizes and program cuts.

So that means we teachers are just supposed to shut up and like it? We are supposed to accept unfunded mandates, yet make test scores go up? Our salaries get cut, we lose our jobs, and he says it's our ATTITUDE??? :wtf:

This is my head right now: :nuke:

 :banghead: :grr:

2. We education folks in CA understand
completely! We have Governor Boobengrabber who considers nurses, teachers and public employees, i.e., police and fire employees, to be
'special interests' while he's busily taking special interest money from the Sacramento car dealers! He bragged about the nurses that he was always "kicking their butts" and then they kicked his! Now today I hear he's given up trying to screw us out of our public employees pensions which are, as you know, hard-earned! We are hounding Mr. Fundraiser Schwarzenegger at every function he's attending to raise money for his agenda to force a $70 million dollar special election in November, to redistrict California ala Tom DeLay and King Rat Rove.

But the workers of CA are fighting back and his approval has dropped (just like Bully Bush's!) and we expect him not to regain any popularity any time soon with his neocon agenda. Maybe first we'll kick his butt and then we'll all kick Bush's too. They are protesting in CA!

Believe me, I hear ya!

6. Cutting overhead ...

That sounds like a challenge.

Some enterprising economics teacher (assuming, of course, your schools still have the budget to employ one) should take this and use it as a class project. Audit the governor's office or the state bureacracy in general and figure out ways to trim overhead, funneling the savings into the budget for schools.

Something simple like mandating that the A/C during a legislative session is never set below 90 in the summer or above 50 in the winter could work wonders. Force law makers to hold bake sales to fund their purchases of office supplies. Make the motto of the government's bureacracy be "If it's yellow, let it mellow ..." to cut the water bill.

All kinds of things could be done to cut overhead, and since the governor suggested it, I'm certain he'd be the first to jump at the suggestions.

7. In Michigan there is a bill for the state to take over our benefits
It would mean no more bargaining over health benefits. Watch the good teachers and other employees leave in droves. Professionals are expected to work for peanuts while CEO's and Insurance companies rake in huge money. What do our representative do? Not a goddamn thing.

10. The thing on his mind isn't balancing the budget ....
It's fucking as many of the 'little people' ofthis state as hard and as thoroughly as he can, so that his Carmel/Fishers/Geist buddies have free reign over the state.

12. IOW... "Parents are whiney babies... they want a good education
for their kids... well they have to have a trimmed back education so we wealthy can get all or our tax breaks from the feds - and the state has to make up the difference with huge cuts in state budgets. Who cares that you want a good education for your kids... if You really were worthy, you would be wealthy like me, and be able to either afford a really wealthy district or a private school... otherwise your lack of ability to afford these things MUST indicate some flaw on your part, and we the wealthy shouldn't be expected to pay for YOUR flaw. Vive la Bush Federal Tax cuts!!!"

That is salin's interpretation of Mitch's comments.

13. Salin, I love the way you can get inside of OBM's head.
I thnk you have it in a nutshell.

"What are you whining about? None of *MY* friends are having a hard time finding good education for their kids...Have you looked into Park-Tudor, or St. Richard's?"
