Gov. Mitch Daniels said Tuesday he would welcome the Ten Commandments back to the grounds of the Indiana Statehouse, and keepers of an existing monument built for that purpose are eager to oblige him.
One day after the U.S. Supreme Court said a longstanding display on the grounds of the Texas Capitol was legal, Daniels said returning the commandments to the Indiana Capitol's grounds should be "a straightforward matter."
A monument similar to the one in Texas stood near the Indiana Statehouse for more than 30 years. It was removed in 1991 after being repeatedly damaged by vandals. A federal judge blocked the installation of a replacement monument in 2000, saying it could be seen as a government endorsement of religion.
But within hours of Monday's Supreme Court ruling in the Texas case, state Sen. Brent Steele, R-Bedford, sent Daniels a request to give the replacement monument a home. Considerable debate remained over the fallout from Monday's court actions, which also included the rejection of religious displays at two county courthouses in Kentucky.
Even so, Daniels didn't hesitate when asked Tuesday whether Indiana should have a Ten Commandments display on the Statehouse lawn.
"I think it is entirely appropriate," he said.
"The Supreme Court has been badly confused for a long time about what the founders intended. To me, this display of the Ten Commandments is entirely appropriate and clearly constitutional."
