1970 Pot Bust Haunts IN Republican Gov Candidate

In recent months, reporters from Indiana and beyond have dug into Republican candidate for governor Mitch Daniels' 1970 arrest, leaving his campaign fearing sensational stories that would exaggerate a 34-year-old minor drug bust.

The consequences stem from May 14, 1970, when police converged on a Princeton University dorm room where Daniels, 21, and two friends slept. Daniels spent two nights in jail and, more than a year later, pleaded guilty to using marijuana.

The penalty: $350 and a good dose of public humiliation.

Daniels has been living with it ever since. He repeatedly has offered the information to employers and answered questions from reporters. It came up during FBI and other federal government investigations before he assumed high-level posts in the Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush White Houses.

As Election Day nears, the issue has resurfaced. Court and police officials in New Jersey say a stream of reporters and others have come calling for the three-decades-old records. Other media outlets -- including this one -- have looked into the matter this year.

...he seems to be handling the issue pretty well. Indy Channel 13 had a big story on it and when they interviewed him, he just told the reporter what happened with no attempt to fudge the facts or dodge responsibility.

No wonder the Bush administration didn't want him around...

The Gingrich Gang made such a big fucking deal about allegations of pot use by the Big Dawg, and I think it's fair use to hammer Mitch with this.

After all, Daniels spent the night in jail, Clinton didn't.

Yes, he "paid his debt to society" and all that, but his political party set the Standards of Conduct, *I* didn't.

But more damaging is his Ken Lay-like involvement in the rape of IPALCO.
