Question for Indianapolis/Marion County residents...
How is the road clearing up here? The snow fell so quickly this afternoon that the awful conditions of the roads was understandable - but generally - how is the road plowing in the area? What should I expect in the morning? My pm commute that was regularly 15 minutes was an hour... should I expect the same in the morning? Worse (longer)? Better?

1. Here I am at 5 AM waiting to see if my employer has a 2-hour delay
The roads looked like they haven't been plowed yesterday even though they had been, the snow was falling so fast. My commute home normally takes no more than 10 minutes, it took me nearly 40 due to the traffic. Many employers let their workers go home early, and it seems like we all hit the road at the same time.

It was so bad last night that my bowling league was cancelled. It usually takes something short of a nuclear attack for them to cancel bowling.

The problem this morning is the drifting of snow because of the westerly winds and the powdery snow combination.

Marion County/Indianapolis has pretty good record in clearing roads since the great blizzard of '78, but sometimes they get overwhelmed as they did yesterday.

Have a great weekend!

2. thanks for the perspective
recieving no word yet - I think I will hit the road soon ... as it took me an hour to get home (a fifteen minute drive) last night.

I shovelled last night around 7 pm - and due to blowing, it is hard to tell. Good news, I guess, is that except for two blocks - I can drive on major roads the entire way to work.

Be Safe!

3. Good morning, Salin !
My limited travel up College Avenue to Carmel just now was ok.
Bumpy, but ok.
The side streets are still snow covered, but the main roads (96th, Meridian etc) seem to be slushy with some slick spots.

:hi: You should be ok, just give yourself some extra time to accomodate the boneheads, and drive safely !!

4. Indianapolis earns an "F" for snow removal on Thursday!
News reports kept saying last night that the City had 80 plows on the streets. Where??? I fought my way out of downtown on Delaware, Meridian and 16th Street (headed out to Speedway) and I NEVER saw a single snow plow! These were proclaimed to be major traffic arteries for the city, but you couldn't tell it from the job they did (or didn't do). A 20 minute trip took more than 90 minutes. I must give the Speedway City crews a big thumbs up, as the streets were noticeably better once I got into the Speedway city limits.
As for this morning, I saw two vehicles stuck in the turn lanes on 16th Street at White River, plus abandonded cars on Stadium Drive and New York. Commute in from the Westside this morning was better than last night.
This city has GOT to get better at snow removal, or it's going to be a really long winter!
Now, where is that Star web poll where I get to rate the job done on snow removal?

5. Be careful out there, salin!
Thankfully, my school called a Snow Day, which means that it must be horrible out there. South Madison Schools are always the last to call, if they call at all. I have driven to school many days on unplowed roads, slipping and sliding all the way.

Hope all of you are making it where you need to go safely! :hi:

6. School is open in Speedway.
We have no busses so were usually the last one in the county to close. Doesn't really matter to me though because I'm one of the lucky ones that has to be here even if school is canceled.

7. I, too, was able to stay put.
main roads are clear/drivable - but side roads still pretty covered.

Roads should be better tomorrow when I drive down to Bloomington.

Like you - hope everyone is safe and warm! :hi:
