Indiana has more terror targets than NY???
Today's New York Times has an interesting story on terrorist targets - I can hardly believe that we in Indiana have more potential sites than New York!
"The National Asset Database, as it is known, is so flawed, the inspector general found, that as of January, Indiana, with 8,591 potential terrorist targets, had 50 percent more listed sites than New York (5,687) and more than twice as many as California (3,212), ranking the state the most target-rich place in the nation."

Geesh! We're famous! Hope my house isn't on the list, but living in Republican Speedway, I've probably made the list. What a proud day, eh? Here's the article, with the link pasted below. Now - go paint some targets on your stuff, fellow Hoosiers! They're coming for our POPCORN - somebody stop 'em!

U.S. Terror Targets: Petting Zoo and Flea Market?

WASHINGTON, July 11 — It reads like a tally of terrorist targets that a child might have written: Old MacDonald’s Petting Zoo, the Amish Country Popcorn factory, the Mule Day Parade, the Sweetwater Flea Market and an unspecified “Beach at End of a Street.”

But the inspector general of the Department of Homeland Security, in a report released Tuesday, found that the list was not child’s play: all these “unusual or out-of-place” sites “whose criticality is not readily apparent” are inexplicably included in the federal antiterrorism database.

The National Asset Database, as it is known, is so flawed, the inspector general found, that as of January, Indiana, with 8,591 potential terrorist targets, had 50 percent more listed sites than New York (5,687) and more than twice as many as California (3,212), ranking the state the most target-rich place in the nation.

The database is used by the Homeland Security Department to help divvy up the hundreds of millions of dollars in antiterrorism grants each year, including the program announced in May that cut money to New York City and Washington by 40 percent, while significantly increasing spending for cities including Louisville, Ky., and Omaha.

“We don’t find it embarrassing,” said the department’s deputy press secretary, Jarrod Agen. “The list is a valuable tool.”

--snip--

In addition to the petting zoo, in Woodville, Ala., and the Mule Day Parade in Columbia, Tenn., the auditors questioned many entries, including “Nix’s Check Cashing,” “Mall at Sears,” “Ice Cream Parlor,” “Tackle Shop,” “Donut Shop,” “Anti-Cruelty Society” and “Bean Fest.”

“Now we know why the Homeland Security grant formula came out as wacky as it was,” Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, said Tuesday. “This report is the smoking gun that thoroughly indicts the system.”

The source of the problems, the audit said, appears to be insufficient definitions or standards for inclusion provided to the states, which submit lists of locations for the database.

-snip-

The inspector general questions whether many of the sites listed in whole categories — like the 1,305 casinos, 163 water parks, 159 cruise ships, 244 jails, 3,773 malls, 718 mortuaries and 571 nursing homes — should even be included in the tally.

But the report also notes that the list “may have too few assets in essential areas.” It apparently does not include many major business and finance operations or critical national telecommunications hubs.

The department does not release the list of 77,069 sites, but the report said that as of January it included 17,327 commercial properties like office buildings, malls and shopping centers, 12,019 government facilities, 8,402 public health buildings, 7,889 power plants and 2,963 sites with chemical or hazardous materials.

One business owner who learned from a reporter that a company named Amish Country Popcorn was on the list was at first puzzled. The businessman, Brian Lehman, said he owned the only operation in the country with that name.

“I am out in the middle of nowhere,” said Mr. Lehman, whose business in Berne, Ind., has five employees and grows and distributes popcorn. “We are nothing but a bunch of Amish buggies and tractors out here. No one would care.”

But on second thought, he came up with an explanation: “Maybe because popcorn explodes?”

2. Newport Indiana VX Stockpile
Indiana tops the list of terrorist targets because Newport, Indiana, about 50 miles west of the state’s capital and 30 miles north of Terre Haute, is/was home to one of the world’s largest stockpiles of VX nerve gas. The stockpile held more than 2.5 million pounds of the substance, which is rated by Guinness World Book of Records as being the deadliest substance known to mankind. The smoke from a burning stockpile of 2.5 million pounds is enough to kill the population of the entire planet several times over. The army has begun disposing of the chemical stockpile but it is not complete. As little as 200 micrograms is enough to kill an average person. Until that time Indiana will remain at the top of the list. This information was not part of the New York Times article U.S. Terror Targets: Petting Zoo and Flea Market? Instead the article highlighted a Amish popcorn business in Indiana.

It is important for the NYT to understand the main reason why Indiana is one of the top terrorist targets. An attack here may affect the entire country. Believe me terrorist focus in Indiana has little to do with our popcorn. There are several other high terror targets: Indy 500 & Eli Lily are the two that come to mind.

I kinda got the feeling that the NYT was laughing at us instead of with us.

4. oh for crying out loud
The VX nerve gas, and Crane, and the Indy 500 do NOT warrant Indiana TOPPing the list. They just don't. I was born and raised here and have lived all but 2 years of my life in this state and we should NOT be at the top of the Homeland Security list.

As for who is laughing at who...I'm laughing (to keep from screaming) at the corruption and general incompetence of Homeland Security and at anyone who dares defend Indiana being anywhere near the top of any list of terrorist targets.

Seriously.

5. Indiana tops the list because of DHS incompetence.

Confusion between the state and federal offices on what was to be included in the list caused the disparity between Indiana and other states.

Here's a follow up article:

I hope the VX disposal site is high on their list but it certainly doesn't contribute to the large number of other sites included by the state.

7. That too!
BTW Voltaire, I've been reading that those of us who dare to use profanity on DU are nothing more than self-loathing disruptors who are chasing people away from the Democratic Party.

9. Maybe not......
but there is still enough nerve gas to wipe out the U.S,A. and Canada should it get bombed. It's a much higher target now that much of it has been disposed. Terrorists are not interested in popcorn or eliminating the entire planet but at this level eliminating the USA and Canada is very tempting.

in Manhattan than there are in the whole state.

I read this report as part of the paranoia that permeates this state. I've heard this sort of thing since I was a kid. "Did you know your town is on top of the terrorist target list b/c of the GE plant there?" I suppose in the 70s you could replace terrorist with soviet.

11. Ever notice how
the people in fear of being attacked by terrorist the most, are the people least likely to be attacked to begin with! I mean people in New York City have less fear then people living in the rural midwest. It's not likely that terrorist are going to blow up the local wal-mart or dirt track filled with 75 people on a saturday night! I heard both of those in the past few years, I've bitten my tongue to keep from laughing.

12. terrorists probably didn't even know Indiana existed
until this report.

It's hilarious that anybody anywhere at any time seriously thinks Indiana is a terrorist target.
