Democrats call for BMV commissioner to be ousted

http://www.wthr.com/Global/story.asp?S=5175842

July 20, 2006 11:10 AM EDT

State Democrats are calling for BMV Commissioner Joel Silverman to be ousted.

The BMV has seen a number of problems, the most recent incident being a computer upgrade that led to many services being down for a week or more. That led to long waits at many branches. Now the Indiana Democratic Party has launched an online petition encouraging people to comment on BMV service and to call on Governor Mitch Daniels to replace Silverman as BMV's leader.

The Democrats cite branch closures and service problems among their reasons for the petition. They also point to the problem police had last week when they could not get updated information on driver records. Last week, Governor Daniels apologized and took responsibility for problems at the BMV. He expressed frustration at the computer issues that led to delays.

1. The last 2 days have been a horror story for me
Waiting for 2 days, 3 hours yesterday, 2 hours today for someone to just get a learner's permit.
Wednesday ALL the computers (statewide, they said) shut down a little after 1:30 p.m.
They could not even do local prints in the branch we were in.
What kind of a system hoses so badly that you can't even get local prints?

Today while we were in there I would hear individual operators telling the customer in front of them things like:
"Oh this pc is frozen" "oh I will reboot and maybe it will come back and let me in"
What is this shit?

A sign on the kiosk in the entry way says that is down until upgrade problems are resolved...I thought the upgrade went in at the beginning of July? They still can't get the self-service kiosks running?

The BMV has always been bad, even under democrats I'll admit, but I don't ever remember it seeming this dysfunctional and buggy.

I noticed on the back of one of the terminals it says 'Planar Systems' and looked like it was from Oregon. Couldn't Joel and his man Mitch find a crony in Indiana at least to waste our tax money for us? Geez, it seems to me the State should be getting some kind of fucking non-performance refund on this system. it's a travesty...

Maybe Mitch picked up this system during an Oregon layover on one of his so-called job creation junkets to the Far East?
Didn't his mother of all ugly RVs come from an Oregon comapny too. I think we should investigate how much Indiana tax money is being spent in Oregon, something's rotten.

3. A couple of years back
the BMV seemed to be running smooth from my experiences, back in 2003 I went to the College Park location at 86/Michigan Rd in Indianapolis to get plates and I'm being serious, I was in and out in 15 minutes. Now I've heard that location the average time is 3+ hours.

4. I noticed the same thing.
Several years ago when I got my driver's licence renewed, it was quick and painless. I was really impressed, but this last time was a nightmare. That and I took my 86 year old grandmother to get her licence renewed at the same time. She had lost her glasses and I KNOW she can't see without them (SHE knows she can't see without them), but she "passed" the eye exam anyway. Hmm.

5. Funny the bit about your grandmother
passing the eye exam, They asked me to take mine off at the brownsburg location, I do and read the chart and they say I correctly identified all of the letters, I just think ok, I can't read anything that small 4 feet in front of me!

6. Did ya notice
at least in the article I read that Joel was quick to point out that this upgrade business was started in the previous administration? Poor Mitch and Joel simply cannot be blamed for something those terrible Dems did to them. But on another local board i post on an employee of BMV says that things have been messed up since Mitchey poo appointed the Galyans reject to his post. Joel let some of the previous staff go to fill positions with his people and the employees are needing to teach the new staff how things work as they know little about BMV. Other things such as cutting corners and having one person do the work of three, etc.
