Indiana eyed as bunker-buster weapons testing site

Aug 16, 2006 06:59 PM EDT

Kevin Rader/Eyewitness News
The United States government is considering testing a bunker-buster weapon right here in Indiana. It would involve an underground explosion of 700 tons of ammonium nitrate. The weapon test scheduled for the Nevada dessert could move to an abandoned quarry near Mitchell.

Divine Strake, as the project is known, is a $23 million explosive test designed for a Nevada Test site which has now been postponed indefinitely because of local opposition. "Is there a better place for these tests? I'm not going to say. I don't think there is any good place to do these tests," said a protester at the Arizona site.

2. Thanks, madhoosier.
And a belated welcome to DU.
That counterpunch article is a good one.

Here's a Herald-Times/Times Mail article: http://www.tmnews.com/articles/2006/08/15/sections/news/news69.txt

Of course, Bayh and Buyer don't know anything about it.

5. I wish i were down that way, too.
I'm going to try to pull some info together this weekend and write a letter to my local newspaper. The progressive group at the university where I work has sent out some info, too. People need to know about this.

6. I think there is info about this from the Quakers (AFSC?)
the blast, I believe, contains quite a bit of cyanide. Think on it... reported 'mushroom cloud' was expected in Nevada... is this not going to be the case in Southern Indiana... just a mere 30 miles (give or take) south of Lake Monroe - which provides drinking water to south central Indiana? What will it do to the Hoosier National Forest?

And how crazy is it for a HUGE, HUGE blast in an area riddled with Karst? Like they expect us to believe it would only effect the single quarry within which the blast would occur?

Frightening stuff.

The Rogers Group and Buyer say that it is NOT going to happen.
