Oil-like substance suspected in river spill

Environmental workers are conducting more tests this morning on a rainbow-hued liquid found floating in the White River. Investigators suspect that some kind of petroleum-based product spilled into the river between Kentucky and Madison avenues just south of Downtown, Marion County Health Department spokesman John Althardt said.

Althardt said he expects the tests will pinpoint the exact substance quickly, but he declined to give an exact time frame. The Indianapolis Fire Department found the spill and contacted health officials about 6:30 p.m. Monday. The spill is believed to have originated from the Pogue's Run outflow, officials said.
