Indiana University football coach Terry Hoeppner, 59, passed away Tuesday morning at 6:50 a.m. at Bloomington Hospital following a lengthy illness.


"Coach died due to complications from the brain tumor for which he had been treated surgically and therapeutically over the past 18 months, " said Indiana University team physician Dr. Larry Rink. "His family was at his side."
Hoeppner was named IU's 26th head football coach on December 17, 2004 and he and his coaching staff have worked tirelessly to generate enthusiasm and passion for the program since his arrival in Bloomington.
"Terry's fight was courageous and will serve as an inspiration to those who have known him," said IU Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan. "This is a truly sad day for our community and all of our thoughts and prayers are with the Hoeppner family and to those whose lives he has touched."
Further details regarding services are pending at this time, and will be forthcoming once they are determined.


First of all I am not fan of IU Football.I have friends that have children that played for the man,and after meeting him he was a great man...

1. I can't express why,

but for a quasi local (b-ton is my home town, and now that I have returned to the state after living on both coasts - I still spend many a weekend there) - I am moved by this news. The ongoing saga of his health far surpassed the perpetual (20+ years) sniping at IU football - and the discussion was transformed for the past several years about him, his strength, courage and spirit (and his valient fight against this virulent form of cancer.) I think that he has touched many people that he had never directly met. I hope his family knows this, and finds comfort in this as they deal with their grief.

IU coach Hoeppner dies

Bloomington - Indiana University sources confirm head football coach Terry Hoeppner has died at the age of 59.

Hoeppner died at 6:50 this morning of complications from brain cancer, with his family at his side, according to a university spokesman. (Read the university's press release.)

Late last week, the school named assistant Bill Lynch to replace him as coach for the 2007 season.

Hoeppner, who went 9-14 in two seasons as Indiana's coach, had taken three medical leaves since December 2005. He hadn't been seen publicly since late February.

Hoeppner left the team temporarily three times in 15 months starting in December 2005 when doctors removed a tumor from his right temple a year after athletic director Rick Greenspan hired Hoeppner.


---I did not go to IU (althought my sister did), nor am I much of an IU fan, but I thought he fought valiantly against his illness while trying to be a good coach. May he rest in peace and his family gain comfort during this difficult time.

4. I just heard the news tonight.

He seemed like a class act. I don't know him - but after I heard the news I felt compelled to check the forum and post if there was no message. His battle with cancer has been public (due to his position) and very courageous and inspirational. My heart goes out to those whose lives were touched by him, and to the rest of us who were inspired - let the inspiration continue.
