Indiana Father Kills Sex Offender Who Broke Into Home
Source: AP

INDIANAPOLIS — A convicted sex offender died Sunday during a struggle with a father who found the naked man in or near his 17-year-old daughter's bedroom, police said.

Police responding to a call from the city's northwest side about 3:20 a.m. found 64-year-old Robert McNally on the hallway floor with his arm around the neck of 52-year-old David T. Meyers, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police spokesman Sgt. Matthew Mount said Meyers had a heart condition and may have had a heart attack. An autopsy was planned.

Police said Meyers was naked except for a mask and latex gloves and had entered the home through a window near the girl's bedroom with rope, condoms and a knife. He was familiar with the home's layout because it belonged to a relative, police said.....

...."Nobody wins," McNally told The Indianapolis Star. "It's a lose-lose situation for everybody. He has family also.....

2. It's good that Mr. McNally has empathy for Meyers' family
But it is a win for all of the people Meyers might have victimized in the future if he hadn't been stopped.

3. I don't think anybody could argue that this father...
...is anything but a hero.

I only hope that I could be so brave--and as successful as this father--if a monster like
this ever broke into our home.

6. It's the new GOP pro-rape position in support of Palin
Palin's pro-rape stance:

1) No abortion for victims of rape or incest
2) Fires police chief supposedly because he seeks more money to combat sexual assault (that's what they admit to!)
3) Makes rape victims pay for their own investigation, thereby disincentivizing them from pressing charges

Palin is a pro-rape governor in a state with the highest per capita incidence of rape in the country!

12. Well, I think the father is probably feeling a mix of emotions. I'm sure he's relieved
and happy that his daughter is safe, but he killed a man. Even if the man was a monster and the father was a hero, it still has to be tough to deal with the knowledge that you just choked the life out of another human being. I understand why the father said what he said, and I don't know that it necessarily makes Fox sympathetic to the rapist by quoting him. Not that Fox doesn't SUCK, of course.

10. I applaud his compassion, but he's a better man than me.
Then again, since few of us have been in the situation of having someone die in our arms as the result of our actions, I doubt few of us really know what he's feeling or thinking.

15. More from the article:
Meyers had served 10 years in prison for criminal confinement and sexual deviate conduct and was wanted in Boone County for failure to register as a sex offender. He was registered as a sex offender in Marion County.

------------------

Sounds like he was a sexual predator who had no plan to stop harming women. It's unfortunate that he was allowed to roam freely and put more people at risk, I'm glad that is no longer an issue.

The article also said they weren't planning on prosecuting Mr. McNally, which ought to be a given but you never know.

16. UPDATE: Coroner: Intruder died of strangulation
http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080929/NEWS02/80929059

A registered sex offender restrained by an Indianapolis father after a home break-in Sunday died of strangulation, the Marion County coroner has ruled.

(snip)

An autopsy determined the cause of death to be asphyxia by strangulation with contributing cardiovascular disease, said Marchele Hall, the coroner's office manager. "He had heart problems," she said.

Matthew Symons, spokesman for the Marion County prosecutor, said McNally apparently acted in self-defense.

"Based on the facts we have, we don't anticipate filing any charges," Symons said. "We will do a standard review that we do in all such situations."
